CASARES, Spain --- Former Augusta State star Oliver Wilson, of England, scored a pair of upsets in the group stage of the round-robin World Match Play Championship, which started on Thursday.

Wilson, who is ranked 40th in the world, beat No. 10 Sergio Garcia and No. 11 Martin Kaymer, both by 1-up scores to earn four points.

In Group B, Wilson will take on Robert Allenby, who is ranked 30th, today. Allenby won one match and halved another Thursday.

Anthony Kim also earned four points in Group A after beating Paul Casey and two-time U.S. Open champion Retief Goosen, both by 3 and 2 scores.

Casey, the highest ranked player in the tournament at No. 4, lost 1-up to Scott Strange of Australia before falling to Kim.

Casey, who just returned to action after tearing a rib muscle on Aug. 6, was eliminated.

CHAMPIONS TOUR: In Sonoma, Calif., Phil Blackmar and Jeff Sluman shot 6-under-par 66s in breezy conditions to share the first-round lead in the Champions Tour's season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship.

Eduardo Romero, the Toshiba Classic winner in March at Newport Beach, was a stroke back at 67, and John Cook and Brad Bryant opened with 68s.

Charles Schwab Cup points leader Loren Roberts had two eagles in 70.

Augusta native Larry Mize had 71 and is tied for 16th place in the 29-player event.

EUROPEAN/ASIAN TOURS: In Singapore, Ian Poulter took the lead over Ernie Els at the Singapore Open before play was halted by darkness after a three-hour suspension due to lightning.

Poulter, who had six birdies, shot 5-under-par 66 at Sentosa Golf Club, one stroke ahead of Els and Chan Yih-shin.

"It was nice," Poulter said after his round. "There were no mistakes on the back nine and on my front nine, after I bogeyed the first, I started to hit some good shots."

Phil Mickelson, who had an eagle and three birdies to go with three bogeys for 69, was in a group of seven players three shots off the lead.

"I putted well today, and as the week goes on I think I will get better and better as I get accustomed to the speed of the greens," Mickelson said.

Poulter is looking to move up the rankings of the European Tour's Race to Dubai, where he's currently in 29th place.

About half the field had not completed the first round when play was stopped by darkness.

Padraig Harrington and Geoff Ogilvy were among the players who will finish the first round on Friday morning.

PGA TOUR: In Madison, Miss., Thursday's first round of the Viking Classic was suspended because of impending rain and wet conditions at Annandale Golf Club, pushing the tournament into a Monday finish and leaving officials hoping for better weather today.

"We're definitely into Monday right now," said Slugger White, the PGA Tour's vice president for rules and competition.

The first tee times for Thursday's round were pushed back three hours because of the saturated course. Officials suspended the round before noon.

Augusta native Charles Howell is in the field of the Fall Series event.
