I really think this whole idea was just an excuse for the commissionczars to get a free trip to Arkansas.
Help! I'm in a time warp!
Augusta wants to bring back trolley tracks to downtown Augusta. Am I the only person older than 50 in the area who remembers how many wrecks those tracks caused?
Go back and read the papers from the early 1950s to see how happy everyone was to get rid of the tracks that made driving the streets hazardous, especially when the streets were wet. Who thought of this idea, the wrecker and auto body shops?
This is 19th-century transportation! My grandparents met on a downtown trolley, and they have been dead for 60 years.

Mrs. Trammell, you are correct. I pushed bus service when I was on the DDA. omnomnom, it was the DDA not the Commission who thought this up, made the trip (on our dime), and spent $37,000.00 on the study to tell them what they already knew. The DDA should not get anymore public funds given thier track record of wasting our tax dollars.
Brad.. do you know how much their "prettification" of 10th street cost? I remember hearing it was over 50-thousand dollars!
actually i found the old story.. 192-thousand dollars.. wonder which contractor(s) got the sweet deal for that bid..
Mr. Palmer did not agree with spending any money to study the trolley: www.butchforaugusta.org
In addition to the traffic nuisances regarding trolleys, the holes in your wallet to pay for the trolleys will be nuisances also.
Why pay 20 to 30 million dollars to do a job that our current bus fleet could do just as well? But then it looks like the commissioners (and/or DDA) could have seen that before spending $37,000 for the study. I wonder how many unpaid leave days that is for city emplorees.
I must lack understanding in this matter?! A/RC has continued to reduce public transit at every turn. Not only have routes been removed but also the waiting times have gone from 1/2 hour to an hour or more in some cases. And the DDA and others are actually considering a trolley system??? In cities like (dare I say it) Savannah, they have trolley's but their public transit has expanded and become more efficient while adding "greener' buses. A real investment has been made and it has been a real boost to the city and tourism. Their buses even have bike racks on the front that encourages students as well as other cyclist to ride the buses. How neat is that? But then if I am not mistaken, Savannah actually has a master plan with cooperation and stakeholders involved from many different areas of concern, from the industrial and manufacturing sectors to the educational, health care, tourism and service sectors. I don't know. Maybe they believe something that folks here have never been able to realize: "A rising tide lifts all boats." But maybe one day we'll catch the vision and develop a plan for urban development that won't be comprised of such a hodge-podge of wishes and whims.
I agree with southernguy08. What in the world are the commissioners thinking with this whole trolley deal. More law enforcement would be the right thing to do as well as expanding CURRENT public transportation that actually helps people, rather than downsizing it. Who will ride the trolley's?? the certain few students from mcg to downtown??? What an absolute Croc this is.
Wow, a LTE that makes perfect sense. Steeler, the "medical community" is supposed to ride the trolley so that they can eat in downtown restaurants at lunch. That was printed in the paper. That is the honest truth.
Can't fill the buses - losing money there - so let's start a trolley line?
This seems like a partisan issue: the citizens see it as a waste and the DDA wants a cute/expensive project to spend money on. There is no need for this kind of trolley. Put money into mass transit ideas that are needed and actually get people places.
bum-fogglin' ain't it?
Cars are constantly having to be re-aligned from the obstacle course that is Augusta/Richmond County robes. Why would we want another obstacle course in the form of trolley lines?
They never come up with useful ideas. Its always some far fetched BS like the Tee Center, Golf Hall of Fame, Trollies, Race Tracks, downtown baseball stadium, etc. Yet reports say they forgot about keeping up the Riverwalk.
Your commission appointed DDA folks! Give em' a round of applause!
How long does a round trip in this thing take? Seems like it would eat up a lunch hour fairly quickly.
