Saturn dealer plans to stay on Gordon Highway

Saturn of Augusta is selling the last of its new cars but should remain open after the demise of the General Motors brand.

"As of right now, we're not receiving any more inventory from the manufacturer. They're not producing any more Saturns," said Greg Hodges Jr., the general manager of the Gordon Highway dealership.

Since the Penske Group pulled out of its purchase of the brand from General Motors, the automaker has been winding down the vehicle's production.

The dealership has roughly 30 to 35 new Saturn vehicles remaining on its lot, Mr. Hodges said.

For the next two months, the dealership will continue to operate as a Saturn dealership. The future is up in the air after that, he said.

"We're still waiting on our corporate office to call and let me know what direction we're going in," Mr. Hodges said.

He expects to receive further information in the next 10 days.

Mr. Hodges said that despite the phase-out of Saturn, the dealership isn't closing its doors.

"We plan on being in business here, in this building, in one form or another. I don't know exactly what that means or how we're going to be in business here, but I don't see us closing this segment of Gordon Highway. We've been here since '92. That's what we plan on continuing to do," Mr. Hodges said.

Saturn of Augusta has 18 employees. Mr. Hodges said he hopes to keep them all on his payroll, but if needed, they could be placed at one of Stokes-Hodges Group's seven other dealerships, he said.

After the end of the year, the dealership will continue to provide regular maintenance for Saturn vehicles.

"We've got a lot of customers who have been doing business with us for many years, and we're going to stay here for them. Ultimately, we want to be in the car business in this facility," he said.

The Augusta-Aiken area lost two new car dealerships this year because of the woes of their manufacturers: Augusta Dodge and Dick Smith Chrysler.

Henna Chevrolet Cadillac in Aiken has changed over to selling used cars since GM said it would not renew its franchise agreement with the dealer as part of its effort to trim the network.
