Officers suspect man is behind car break-ins

  • Follow Metro

Authorities say the Monday arrest of a Martinez man might clear up several Augusta thefts and car break-ins.

Richmond County deputies arrested Dustin Levi Overstreet, 20, of the 400 block of Blue Ridge Parkway, a day after they say he pointed a gun at a deputy and pulled the trigger, only to have it misfire.

Mr. Overstreet is charged with felony obstruction of an officer, entering an auto, simple assault, carrying a concealed weapon, attempting to remove an officer's duty weapon, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, according to a Richmond County jail committal.

According to police accounts, a Hogan Street resident said he awoke early Sunday when he heard someone entering his car. He went outside and found a man in his car, but the man ran away.

Deputy Sylvester Rosier later saw Mr. Overstreet in a wooded area near the 1000 block of Baker Avenue and chased and caught him.

During a scuffle, Mr. Overstreet began punching the deputy and tried to remove the officer's gun from its holster. Mr. Overstreet then pulled out his own small pistol and attempted to shoot, but the weapon misfired, the deputy's report said.

Mr. Overstreet was able to escape from the deputy but was arrested about 2:30 a.m. Monday in the 900 block of Russell Street -- a short distance from where the break-in occurred.

Authorities say they suspect Mr. Overstreet might be responsible for a number of car break-ins in the McDowell Street area.

He also has outstanding warrants in Columbia County, they said.

Throw this [filtered word] under the jail - we don't need thugs like this walking our streets ever again. This degenerate has no respect for the property of others, lives of others or anything else for that matter. It is bad enough he is a gun toting theif but to pull the trigger on a police officer while fighting him, etc. should get him the death penalty or at the very minimum he should NEVER walk the streets again.

Just My Opinion

Man, so glad that gun misfired! Also glad they apprehended the piece of trash.

leaveitatthedoor

lets see how tough he is in prison.....

gogbd

Bubba likes redheads

bettyboop

EARL84

Little Dustin is one lucky [filtered word]. Thug should have been taken out

andywarhol

gogbd, statistically that is correct. Young white kids are sought by all races in jail.

robbie1

You don't know him, so you should not judge. He's just a misunderstood, "Good Boy." I'm sorry, I think I was possessed by one of the posters on another crimes story...

corgimom

Since he pulled the trigger, he should be taken out. His actions prove he does not value human life. I agree, thankfully the gun misfired. Take him to the swamp, and chain him to a stump.

terry67

See Justass.....the po-po arrests crackers too! I hope they slam his [filtered word] but good! Too bad jail is "soft" a couple of years on a chain gang would be just right for raggedy andy! Or better yet, send him to the ARMY and then to Iraq or Afghanistan! Too bad the ACLU and liberal idiots have punked out our sense of true justice!

MyOpinion2

Should have stayed in school or w/mom and got a job.

I hope cparker is taking note. See his comment yesterday.

If he were a black man, the deputy would have shot him. The only reason he's alive is because he's white and deputies don't shoot white men! --Justus4 (Just thought I'd save him the trouble of writing it himself.)

ispy4u

Where is HUMBLEIDIOT and his crew with their (insert usual suspect descriptions)?

Newsreader

You all missed it! He is from Columbia County, therefore, I am sure he is not involved in any crimes, drugs, or illegal gun possession. He must be part of some covert security team sent in to protect the Hill from these car theives and vandals. LOL!!!

FallingLeaves

"Here come da judge!"

ispy4u

Come on. You know they got the wrong picture. There is someone that lives in Richmond County with the same name. No one from Columbia County ever commits any crime.

butler123

Don't send him to the army, we don't want him.

aftbrn

Bury this thug,.. sick of these little bastards breaking into cars. I live in Columbia county and I've had someone go in my car three times in the 6 months.

foynoyjones

Too bad the "po po" didn't pop a cap in his redheaded [filtered word] when he pulled his little pea shooter!

corgimom

Sure, put him in the Army so he can shoot American soldiers.

Just Another Day

Idiot almost turned a few years in the pokey for breaking into cars to a possible death sentence for shooting a law enforcement official!!!! What a genius!!!!!!!!

foynoyjones

ipsy, breaking news, you were right, white overstreet has been released and replaced with a black overstreet, dang, you have ESP or something?

concernednative

ispy (9:32am), I was thinking the same thing. Carcraft, Apex come on fellas

RoadkiII

Cop should have emptied his 9mm

Jdog33

Yea he was arrested, and will probably be convicted, but sadly will probably get about 3-5 years, whereas some black guys who committed the same crime will get 12-15 years. If you doln't believe me go out and visit mcCormick Sate prison, pull a white convict and a black convict who were convicted by the same judge for the same crime and you will see the sentences difference. It is pitiful...Two difference (race and legal reperesatation)..Justice is not blind..(So please don't come back with your stupid racist remarks), just go see for your self...I worked there (Mc Cormick...Level 3)so I saw it on a daily bases...
