Area teams ousted from state playoffs
In Columbus, Ga., Sequoyah ended Evans' run in the Class AAAA playoffs with a 1-0 win Friday.
In Class AAAAA, Greenbrier was eliminated after a walk-off, three-run home lifted Kennesaw Mountain 4-1 in nine innings.
In Class AAA, Thomson's bid to win a state championship ended with a 5-2 loss to West Laurens.
Thomson was blanked 2-0 by Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe, from the Metro Atlanta area, in its opener on Thursday.
Thomson, which was ranked as high as No. 5 in the state this season, finished with an overall record of 25-7-1.
In Class AA, Screven County beat Vidalia 9-1 but was ousted after a 2-0 loss to Rockmart.

Cyclocross series stops in Augusta
The Georgia Cross cyclocross race series will make a stop in Augusta this weekend at Lake Olmstead Park.
The first race will be held at 10 a.m. Sunday, and the last race, featuring elite racers, is scheduled for 2 p.m. The Augusta Cross Coalition is playing host to the event.

Soderling moves on at Stockholm Open
Top-seeded Robin Soderling edged Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 7-6 (4), 6-4 in the Stockholm Open quarterfinals, remaining on course for a third home final in the Swedish capital.
The 10th-ranked Swede, a surprise French Open finalist, will play Marcos Baghdatis, of Cyprus, in one semifinal today. Baghdatis ousted French qualifier Arnaud Clement 6-4, 6-4.
Olivier Rochus, of Belgium, will meet Thomaz Bellucci, of Brazil, in the other semifinal.
- In Moscow, Alisa Kleybanova upset defending champion Jelena Jankovic, 6-4, 6-3, to advance to the semifinals of the Kremlin Cup. Kleybanova will play Olga Govortsova, of Belarus, who crusied past Vera Dushevina 6-3, 6-0.
- In Luxembourg, Yanina Wick-mayer defeated Kirsten Flipkens 7-6 (1), 4-6, 6-1 in an all-Belgian battle to reach the semifinals of the Luxembourg Open.
- The United States will play the first round of the Fed Cup in France on clay, the French tennis federation said.
The best-of-five series scheduled Feb. 6-7 will be played on indoor clay in the Northern city of Lievin.

Jockey, trainer get sweep at Keeneland
In Lexington, Ky., Bluegrass Princess and Eye of Taurus gave jockey John Velazquez and trainer Kiaran McLaughlin a sweep of the two division races in the Grade III $125,000 Pin Oak Valley Stakes.
- In Arcadia, Calif., Bel Air Sizzle rallied to win Friday's $57,506 feature by a half-length and end a 10-racing skid at Santa Anita's Oak Tree meeting.

Canadian official loses cancer fight
Jack Poole , the man who brought the 2010 Winter Olympics to Vancouver, died. He was 76.
Vancouver Olympic officials said he died Friday in hospital after a lengthy battle with pancreatic cancer.
His death comes a day after the flame for the Vancouver Games was lit in Greece.
