The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee will consider next week the appointment of Georgia Sen. Ed Tarver as U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Georgia.
The executive business meeting will be held Thursday, according to the Judiciary Committee's Web site.
Mr. Tarver was nominated by President Obama to the post in September. If confirmed by the Senate, he would be the first black person to serve in the Southern District post. Mr. Tarver would replace Edmund A. Booth Jr., who retired in September.
If confirmed, Mr. Tarver will be the top federal prosecutor for a district covering 43 counties, stretching from Thurmond Lake to the Florida border with offices in Augusta, Savannah, Statesboro, Dublin, Brunswick and Waycross.
Mr. Tarver, who is part of the Augusta law firm Hull, Towill, Norman, Barrett & Salley, has served as a senator in the Georgia General Assembly since September 2005.
As a U.S. attorney, his salary would be about $150,000 a year, and he would oversee 26 assistant U.S. attorneys.

Good luck Senator.
Ed's a good man, and will do a fine job.
Tarver will have no problem in the Senate. bTW, Justass4, what do you know about GO promotions? I happen to know a couple of officers that DIDN"T get promoted to general that deserved it (my ex's current husband) and two one stars that stopped there as it was a mistake (Signal Corps of course). There was another (black) who was promoted way over his head to three star.
"Mr. Tarver, who is part of the Augusta law firm Hull, Towill, Norman, Barrett & Salley". Tell me why he is not part of the company he represents? Maybe because he is the right color and the rest are not?
