High School Football

Louisville resident wins Beat the Pros

Robbi Walden, of Louisville, Ga., is the winner of the Beat the Pros contest for Week 8.

Walden was one of seven people who correctly picked all 10 high school football games, which beat the best effort by our pros (9-1).

Walden won the drawing and will receive a Beat the Pros T-shirt.

High Schools

Local teams back in playoff action today

Thomson, Screven County, Greenbrier and Evans begin play in the double-elimination Elite Eight of the GHSA softball playoffs today in Columbus, Ga.

Screven County will take on Union County in Class AA, Thomson faces Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe in Class AAA, Evans plays Whitewater in Class AAAA and Greenbrier is matched with Collins Hill in Class AAAAA.

In GISA boys soccer, Westminster and Augusta Prep play their Class AAA semifinal matches today in Macon, Ga.

The Wildcats face host school Stratford while the Cavaliers take on Mount de Sales. Winners move on to the state championship on Saturday.

Boxing

Sponsorship award named for Forrest

The Augusta Boxing Club has established the first annual Vernon Forrest Memorial sponsorship award.

The award will consist of a financial contribution designated to one specific youth member of the boxing club, which will provide complete uniforms and equipment needs for that youth.

Augusta Mayor Deke Copenhaver is providing the necessary private funds (nongovernment) for the first recipient, which will be announced at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the mayor's office in the City-County Municipal Building on Greene Street.

A member of Forrest's family will also be present at the ceremony.

Golf

Jags make top 10 in Golfweek rankings

The Augusta State men's team moved up 18 spots to No. 9 in the latest Golfweek rankings on the strength of their 13-shot victory at the Brickyard Collegiate Championship in Macon, Ga., on Oct. 12.

The ranking is the team's highest since the 2004-05 season. The Jags also moved up to No. 15 in the Golfstat rankings.

The Jags return to action this weekend at the UNCG Bridgestone Collegiate in Greensboro, N.C. at Forest Oaks Country Club, the former home of the PGA Tour's Wyndham Championship.

The 54-hole, two-day event begins with 36 holes on Saturday.

l In Aiken, Melissa Sage, of Charlotte, shot 73 in the second round of the WEGA Senior Amateur Championship to take a two-shot lead over Patty Moore at Houndslake Country Club.

Maggie Weder is third, three shots back.

Today's final round begins with a shotgun start at 9 a.m.

Soccer

Pacers beaten in OT by Patriots on road

In Florence, S.C., Francis Marion's Juan Rivas scored the game-winning goal in the first overtime to lead the Patriots to a 2-1 win over USC Aiken.

Brett Van Pelt scored the only goal for the Pacers.

Tennis

Top seed knocked out of Kremlin Cup

In Moscow, top-seeded Nikolay Davydenko, of Russia, and third-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska, of Poland, were upset in the first round of the Kremlin Cup.

Davydenko lost to former top-ranked Marat Safin, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, while Radwanska was ousted by Maria Kirilenko, 6-3, 6-3.

l In Luxembourg, Kirsten Flipkens defeated Anabel Medina Garrigues 7-5, 6-3 to reach the

quarterfinals of the Luxembourg Open.

U.S. Open winner Kim Clijsters, a doubles partner of Flipkens, will play Patty Schnyder today.
