Siler still sticking on Atlanta roster

Former Augusta State center Garret Siler , an Atlanta Hawks free agent, has survived another round of cuts.

The Hawks trimmed their roster to 16 players by releasing guards Juan Dixon and Mike Wilks .

- The NBA's locked-out referees could be back on the floor in time for the regular season.

The league has made a new proposal, and a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press it will be recommended for approval to the referees on Friday.

Pacers finish 2nd in final event of fall

In Clemmons, N.C., USC Aiken closed out its fall season with a second-place finish in the Will Wilson NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Preview.

The Pacers, who were in fourth place after 36 holes, had the low round of the day with 8-over-par 288 to finish eight shots behind Barton College.

The Pacers' Frederik Schulte closed with 2-under-par 68 to finish tied for second individually at 1-over 211. Kevin Grady tied for 22nd with 224 and Justin Thompson and Mark Dickson tied for 26th at 225.

- In Aiken, Kathryn Binkley and Patty Moore shot 76s to share the first-round lead in the Women's Eastern Golf Association Amateur Championship being played at Houndslake Country Club.

Binkley, of Cornelius, N.C., and Moore, of Charlotte, N.C., have a one-shot lead over Charlotte's Melissa Sage .

Volleyball

Howard, Zappitell lead Lady Jaguars

In Pembroke, N.C., Jessica Howard had 17 kills and Ashley Zappitell had 44 assists as Augusta State stopped UNC Pembroke 3-1.

Pembroke (8-15, 1-9 Peach Belt Conference) won the first game 25-23. Augusta (17-9, 6-5 Peach Belt Conference) then won the final three 25-18, 27-25 and 25-12.

USC Aiken earns first league victory

In Due West, S.C., Alie Brady 's first-half goal stood up as USC Aiken beat Erskine 1-0 for the Lady Pacers' first Peach Belt victory of the season. It was the fifth goal of the season for Brady, who scored at the 18:10 mark.

Maria Frontroth had the assist for the Lady Pacers (4-10, 1-7 Peach Belt Conference).

Softball

Thomson begins its quest in Columbus

In Columbus, Ga., Thomson will take on Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe in the Class AAA quarterfinals starting at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Columbus Softball Complex.

The teams will play a best-of-three series.

Russian star dies in head-on collision

Russian police say gymnast Yury Ryazanov has been killed in a car crash near his home, just days after taking the bronze medal at the world championships.

Police spokesman Oleg Kurochkin said the 22-year-old Ryazanov veered into oncoming traffic.

Tigers-Gamecocks to meet three times

Clemson's new baseball schedule features 27 games against teams that made the NCAA tournament last spring.

The team will play just three games against South Carolina, down from its usual four games of the past few seasons.

Clijsters victorious in first match back

In Luxembourg, Kim Clijsters won her first match since capturing the U.S. Open title, defeating Meghann Shaughnessy 6-2, 6-2 to reach the second round of the Luxembourg Open.
