How She Fared: Shepherd struck out 21 batters in two victories over Wayne County in the Class AAAA softball playoffs. On Saturday, she pitched a shutout in the deciding game of the Lady Knights' second-round series against Thomas County Central.

SHEPHERD ON SHEPHERD: "My teammates pump me up a lot, so I get a lot of motivation out of them. They keep telling me, 'We've got this. We can do it. We've been there before and we're going to back.' It feels really good (to move on) but at the same time I expected this out of us. This is what we've been practicing for and what we've been working for: to go to state."

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING: "Even though she sometimes gets nervous when she goes out there, most of the time she comes through. Right now, she's probably not even as sharp as she could be after coming back from her (knee) injury. But she's getting stronger each time she goes out there." -- Evans coach Colette Cassedy
