The following military announcements have been made:
- Army Pfc. Brandon M. Kennedy , a 2009 graduate of Butler High School and son of Michelle Guerin, of Hephzibah, and Michael Kennedy, of Augusta, has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla.
- Army Reserve Pvt. William S. Oliver , son of Kristina Rainey, of Augusta, has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia.
- Army Pfc. Jazmin Alvarez , daughter of Debra Gomez Alvarez, of Augusta, has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia.
- Army Pvt. Taylor R. Shellito , a 2008 graduate of Evans High School and son of Robin Shellito, of Augusta, and Gail Facey, of Evans, has graduated from the Infantryman One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga.
- Army Pfc. Mariah E. Curry , a 2009 graduate of Hephzibah High School, has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia.
Gets NAACP awards
The Augusta Branch NAACP won three awards at the 67th annual Georgia State Conference Centennial Convention. It received the J.L. Barnes Award for outstanding contributions to the cause of social justice; the Earl T. Shinholster Economic Development Award for projects and related programs to enhance the economic development initiative of the NAACP in Augusta; and the William J. Breeding Sr. Golf Tournament Award for playing host to the annual scholarship event at Forest Hills Golf Club during the 2008 convention in Augusta.
Branch President Charles Smith was re-elected as assistant secretary at the convention.
