Siler survives first cuts of preseason

Garret Siler 's chances of making the Atlanta roster improved Tuesday when the Hawks made their first cuts of the preseason.

Two players -- Aaron Miles and Frank Robinson -- were cut, leaving Siler one of five players vying for two roster spots.

The former Augusta State star center has played in one of the team's three preseason games, scoring one point. The Hawks are at Memphis tonight in another preseason game.

Miles, a former Kansas standout, scored 7 points in his only preseason game. Robinson, from Cal-State Fullerton, averaged 0.7 points in three preseason games.

College Basketball

SIAC tournaments headed to Atlanta

The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's and women's basketball tournaments will move back to Atlanta in hopes of increasing attendance.

The league, of which Paine College is a member, announced Tuesday the 2010 tournament will be held March 1-6 at Morehouse College's Frank L. Forbes Arena at the Atlanta University Center.

- USC Aiken will hold its annual Midnight Madness tonight, beginning at 9 at the convocation center.

College Volleyball

Jaguars' win streak ended at 6 in a row

Armstrong Atlantic State snapped Augusta State's six-match winning streak, beating the Jaguars 25-10, 25-21, 25-17 on Tuesday night in Peach Belt Conference play.

Jessica Howard , the reigning conference player of the week, led Augusta State (14-9, 5-5 PBC) with 10 kills.

Ex-Barnwell coach Atkins dies at 64

Former high school basketball coach Chip Atkins , who won 637 games during his career, the bulk of them at Barnwell High, died Saturday in Aiken after a battle with brain cancer. He was 64.

Atkins is fourth on the South Carolina high school career victory list in boys basketball. He also led teams to two state golf championships.

U.S. forward hurt in one-vehicle wreck

In Arlington, Va., U.S. national team forward Charlie Davies had several broken bones and a lacerated bladder after a one-vehicle accident Tuesday in which another person was killed.

Davies underwent several hours of surgery at Washington Hospital Center Medstar, where he was listed in serious but stable condition. The injuries make it unlikely Davis will play in next year's World Cup.

The accident occurred in the southbound lanes of the George Washington Memorial Parkway in Virginia and claimed the life of Ashley J. Roberta , 22, of Phoenix, Md., according to U.S. Park Police Sgt. David Schlosser .

Gymnastics

Favorite leads way in world qualifying

In London, Kohei Uchimura , of Japan, lived up to his favored status Tuesday, cruising to the top spot after the first two sessions of qualifying at the world gymnastics championships.

His score of 90.925 points was more than 11/2 points better than anyone else, with one session left.

American Tim McNeill , competing at his first major international competition, is a surprising third with 88.775 points. U.S. champion Jonathan Horton is fifth after a fall on pommel horse.

Skiing

Austrian champion retires at age 36

Two-time Olympic champion Hermann Maier , of Austria, retired Tuesday, ending a career in which he became one of Alpine skiing's most prolific racers.

The 36-year-old Maier cited surgery on his right knee in the off-season as the main reason for his retirement.

Garret is such a nice guy and the coach takes notice. At that first preseason game when there were not enough spaces on the bench for everyone, Garret sat on the floor without complaint. For a big man to do that, it means a lot. With two more players cut, it looks like Garret will have a seat on the bench at least.
