Now the president is taking his time?

  • Follow Letters

I see that President Obama is "weeks away" from making a decision on whether or not to send additional troops to Afghanistan as Gen. David Petraeus has requested. The general has requested 40, 000, but Obama is analyzing the amount and whether to send half, a fourth or none.

Funny how he can ram legislation down Congress' throat for stimulus bills, automobile-industry and Wall Street bailouts, etc., but he will need weeks to decide on an increase in troop strength to Afghanistan. Perhaps, because he couldn't ram the health-care reform down Congress' throat, he'll just take his sweet time about this decision.

Besides, he could use this money to initiate and install his own private, civilian police force that would outnumber our military forces -- the plan that he has desired since the beginning!

KSL - More troops were sent

KSL - More troops were sent to Afghanistan in the earliest days of Obama's administration but that was a plan hatched by his predecessor and it was nearly a done deal by the time Obama walked into office. He allowed it to go ahead but the liberals in his political base never cheered. The lefties are disgruntled and Obama will have tread carefully or he'll fracture his own political base. It's going to be more than just embarrassing when his anti-war supporters take to the streets and demonstrate against him.

Why does Obama wait to send

Why does Obama wait to send troops yet rush the porkulus, healthcare, crap and trade? Because the political fallout from sending those troops is substantial, and everyone knows the political ramifications are ALWAYS going to be 0's FIRST and ONLY concern. After all, it's all about HIM!

I certainly know it when I don't see it, Honey. Check you buddy R2. She brought up the class and manners thingy. Why, I don't know, because for the most part, she is lacking therein. Gasp, he could have stopped it. And he did campaign about that being the righteous war. Your argument is poor at best and ridiculous at worst. I expect to see a lot of lame arguments in the future defending 0's misguided policies.

Once again dissman, the Army

Once again dissman, the Army did not press charges against the general. I have read the accounts of the case. Because you served, does not give you the right to implicate the man in a coverup. A bit of advice, you have an edit feature. Please use it and invest in a dictionary.

Between a rush to heal

Between a rush to heal (pressing for health care reform) and a rush to kill (ordering more U.S. troops to Afghanistan) I come done firmly for a rush to heal. That said, President Obama has already escalated U.S. troops levels in Afghanistan significantly (21,000 combat troops + 13,000 support troops). I criticize Obama for taking too long the close Guantanamo, taking too long to end the U.S. occupation of Iraq, for escalating U.S. missile strikes in Pakistan which is rapidly destabilizing Pakistan and pushing that country into war, and for committing additional U.S. troops to Afghanistan instead of withdrawing them. Obama is distracted by lobbying for health care for Americans while the killing wars are allowed to continue abroad. These two dichotomies cannot coexist. What help is health care for Americans if this country is mired in regional wars in the Middle East, Central Asia, and South Asia. If India gets sucked into a war with Pakistan over both countries involvement in Afghanistan a South Asia regional war could easily become a world war. Remember that both Pakistan and India a nuclear armed nations. THAT is my criticism of President Obama's priorities. Peace is the way.

Bush launched two costly wars

Bush launched two costly wars and did not finish either. The Medicare prescription bill gave big pharmacy companies windfall profits and contributed to the skyrocketing cost of health care. Under Bush's Medicare Rx law the government is not allowed to use its massive purchasing power to demand lower costs for drugs from the manufactures (the same way that Walmart forces its suppliers to meet its demand for cost cuts). Under Bush's Medicare prescription law Big Pharmacy can charge the government whatever they want. Bush Medicare prescription law was a gift to his well-heeled supporters in the drug industry. And Bush also ordered or condoned torture of detainees at Guantanamo and other CIA secret "black site" prisons. Tony Blair is getting his comeuppance from families of British soldiers killed in the war in Iraq. As much as Obama wants to put the past behind him, United States will not be able to move forward until the crimes committed by the Bush/Cheney regime are investigated and prosecuted.
