Poker-playing priest rakes in $100,000 to renovate church

The Rev. Andrew Trapp, an Aiken native, won $100,000 in Fox's PokerStars.net Million Dollar Challenge, which aired Sunday.

The Rev. Trapp, 28, says he is donating the money for the renovation of St. Michael Catholic Church in Garden City, S.C., the parish he serves.

He won out against host Daniel Negreanu and former NBA player John Salley on the show, which was taped in Los Angeles earlier this month. His victory entitles him to compete for a prize of $1 million later this year.

"Thank you, Lord," he said after winning the $100,000 prize.

The Rev. Trapp, who was ordained in 2007, said he began playing poker with his parents as a child and honed his skills while in seminary in Ohio.

Two men robbed while trying to buy vehicle

Two Augusta men told police they were robbed at gunpoint in the 2900 block of Crosscreek Road in Hephzibah on Saturday.

According to a Richmond County sheriff's report, a man and his friend went to meet a man about 6:20 p.m. to see about purchasing a vehicle.

When the two arrived, they were approached by a man claiming to be the seller and another man. The man claiming to be the seller pulled out a black semiautomatic handgun and demanded money. A third man then appeared from behind a nearby home.

The victims said $2,500 was stolen from them.

All three men were described as black and in their early 20s. The armed man was about 5 feet 11 inches tall and about 175 pounds. The second man was about 6 feet tall and about 170 pounds. The third man was about 6 feet tall and about 170 pounds.

Person shot at North Augusta gas station

Aiken County authorities were investigating a shooting that took place at Greg's Gas Plus on U.S. Highway 1 in North Augusta early Sunday.

Aiken County sheriff's Sgt. Dave Myers said a person was shot while pumping gas about 2 a.m.

The wound was superficial, and the victim was taken to University Hospital, Sgt. Myers said.

Man shot in leg near Hephzibah intersection

A 19-year-old man said he was shot in the leg while walking near Boykin Road and James Drive in Hephzibah on Saturday night.

A Richmond County sheriff's report says the man was shot about 8:30 p.m. while walking home from a store. The man said he did not know where the shot was fired from. He was taken to Medical College of Georgia Hospital.

Richmond County

- Highland Avenue at Central Avenue will be closed Tuesday through Friday while crews replace underground communication lines.

- Arthern Road near Laney-Walker Boulevard will close Monday at 8 a.m. until Wednesday at 5 p.m. Crews will be rebuilding a railroad crossing.

- Alexander Drive will be closed at the railroad crossing Wednesday through Friday while crews repair the tracks.

- The Interstate 20 westbound ramp to Bobby Jones Expressway will be closed from midnight until 6 a.m. Tuesday. The ramp might also be closed Wednesday, depending on the weather.
