Lady Jags are third after opening round

In Daytona Beach, Fla., Augusta State is in third place after the first round of the 15-team Xavier Invitational at LPGA International.

Behind Natalie Wille , Augusta State shot 11-over-par 299 and trails leader Daytona State College by four shots.

Wille, a freshman from Balsta, Sweden, had 1-under-par 72. Fellow freshman Jordyn Hage had 74 and Tamara Luccioli shot 76. Sarah Mooney had a non-counting 80.

The second round is today and the final round is Sunday.

Baseball

Jackets to play host to youth tournament

The Augusta GreenJackets will play host to the first-ever Doctors Hospital Pro Classic youth baseball tournament Oct. 23-25 at Lake Olmstead Stadium.

The weekend event will feature five area 15-U teams.

Tickets are $5 and will be sold at the gate. Concessions will be sold throughout the event.

Schrader to drive at Dublin-441 tonight

In Dublin, Ga., Ken Schrader, a four-time NASCAR Sprint Cup series winner, will race his dirt track car in the Pro Air Supply Late Model feature tonight at Dublin-441 Speedway.

Gates will open at 10 a.m. and concessions will be available starting at noon. Practice starts at 3 p.m. and the first race on the half-mile dirt oval will be run at 4 p.m.

With the grandstand expected to be at capacity by mid-afternoon, fans will be allowed to bring a lounge chair.

Nadal advances to Beijing semifinals

In Beijing, Rafael Nadal moved into the semifinals of the China Open by defeating Marat Safin 6-3, 6-1.

Nadal outplayed the former top-ranked Russian from the start and remains on track to meet Novak Djokovic in the final Sunday. Djokovic defeated Fernando Verdasco, of Spain, 6-3, 1-6, 6-1.

Today, Nadal will face Marin Cilic, of Croatia, who defeated Nikolay Davydenko, of Russia 6-4, 6-4. Djokovic will face Robin Soderling, of Sweden, who defeated Ivan Ljubicic, of Croatia, 7-6 (3), 6-4.

- In Tokyo, second-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, of France, overpowered qualifier Ernests Gulbis 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 to advance to the semifinals of the Japan Open.

Tsonga hit 19 aces including two to close out the match in 1 hour, 31 minutes.

Gulbis had 11 aces and looked set for an upset but Tsonga took control when he broke the 98th-ranked player to win the second set.

Tsonga's semifinal opponent will be French compatriot Gael Monfils , who downed Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Eighth-seeded Lleyton Hewitt , of Australia, eased into the semifinals with a 6-4, 6-0 win over France's Edouard Roger-Vasselin .

Hewitt, who won here in 2001, will face Russia's Mikhail Youzhny in the semifinals today. Youzhny knocked out defending champion and fifth-seeded Tomas Berdych , of the Czech Republic 6-2, 7-6 (6).

Soccer

North Korea plays to a scoreless tie

In its first game in Europe in 43 years, North Korea played to a 0-0 tie with the French second-division club Nantes in La-Roche-Sur-Yon, France.

The North Koreans are in France in preparation for next year's World Cup. This is North Korea's first appearance in Europe since its epic run at the 1966 World Cup in England, where it ousted Italy on the way to the quarterfinals before losing 5-3 to Portugal.

- The Los Angeles Galaxy want David Beckham 's expected loan to AC Milan to be completed in the next two weeks so the deal doesn't distract from the team's bid for the MLS Cup.
