Wolfpack win 14th region title in a row

Savanah Coon hit a three-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Greenbrier a 3-0 victory over Union Grove on Thursday in a game that decided the Region 2-AAAAA title.

Katie Tracy pitched a one-hitter for Greenbrier, which won its 14th consecutive region title, one for each year of the program's existence. Tracy allowed only a two-out double in the sixth.

"These kids just keep finding a way," said Garrett Black , who has coached all 14 championship teams. "I didn't know if we could top last year's (region championship). But I tell you what, that's pretty special right there."

Greenbrier will play host to the first round of the state playoffs on Tuesday.

Lady Pacers swept in volleyball match

In Aiken, USC Aiken lost 25-19, 25-23, 25-22 to Peach Belt Conference newcomer Montevallo on Thursday in volleyball.

Shannon Byers had six kills to lead the Lady Pacers (11-9, 3-5 PBC). Samantha Lukralle had a team-high 17 digs.

- USC Aiken's men's and women's conference soccer matches at Montevallo have been moved from Saturday to Sunday.

The women's game is scheduled for 1 p.m., followed by the men's game at approximately 3:30.

Game is canceled because of the flu

A South Carolina prep football game scheduled for tonight between Hammond and Cardinal Newman has been canceled because of players with the flu.

Media outlets reported that several members of Cardinal Newman's team had come down with flu-like symptoms.

Serena upset before regaining No. 1 spot

In Beijing, Serena Williams was knocked out of the China Open on Thursday, losing to Nadia Petrova 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (5) only days before regaining the No. 1 ranking.

Williams will take over the top spot in the rankings on Monday.

In the men's draw, Rafael Nadal beat James Blake 7-5, 6-7 (4), 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals.

- Justine Henin hopes to make her comeback at the Brisbane International, where fellow Belgian star Kim Clijsters will start her 2010 season.

The tournament is scheduled for Jan. 3-10.

- Former No. 1 women's player Amelie Mauresmo is considering retiring from tennis.

Mauresmo said on her Web site: "Since I came back from the U.S. Open, I've been trying to practice but I can't find again the desire to come back to competition. I don't want to rush or force things. (I will take) some time to think before making a decision regarding the remainder of my career."

Two suspended for preseason skirmish

Miami Heat center Jamaal Magloire and Detroit's Jonas Jerebko have been suspended by the NBA for their altercation in a preseason game.

Magloire was penalized two games for starting the altercation and striking Jerebko in the face with 5:04 left in the fourth quarter of Detroit's 87-83 victory on Monday. Jerebko was suspended one game for retaliating and hitting Magloire in the face.

The NBA said that both players would serve their suspensions beginning with the first regular-season games they are able to play.

Swimming

Torres faces long road after surgery

Dara Torres knew she needed surgery on her ailing left knee. She didn't expect a radical operation and a recovery of up to 18 months.

The 42-year-old, five-time Olympic swimmer will have the reconstructive procedure Oct. 20 in Boston. Her shinbone will be broken to create more room for cartilage to grow around her kneecap.
