An utter lack of shame

One could likely make a nice living today doing nothing more than chronicling the repeated incidents of shamelessness that have become the hallmark of modern America. Here's another edition:

An Atlanta city councilman who owes $44,000 in back taxes and fines -- after already having $11,000 garnished from his wages -- has now been fined by the courts for running an unregistered charity.

Councilman H. Lamar Willis was fined $25,000 recently by a Fulton County Superior Court judge for not registering his self-named charity -- the H. Lamar Willis Foundation -- or properly maintaining its records.

The IRS says he never applied for tax-exempt status, and the Georgia Secretary of State's office said he never registered it with the state, both of which are necessary. Yet, he claimed tax- exempt status when soliciting up to $300,000 in donations.

You might be wondering: When will he resign in shame? He's a tax cheat and a fraud, to put it charitably. Years ago, it would be a foregone conclusion that such a scoundrel would resign and slink away in disgrace. That was then. This is now.

Willis is seeking a third term on the council.

Whether he gets it is up to voters -- and whether they, unlike Willis, have any shame left.

Don't believe our locals are all that great either. The unpaid taxes are well known. But a few years back they had a Richmond County Commission meeting and the repo man showed up and took three cars that belonged to Commissioners. Seriously, do you ever think some people have a problem with numbers, paying bills and taxes or saving a little? My Uncle Mervin was that way. He was a politician, too, and he ran for Mayor of Branchville, but lost. He said the reason he lost is the black voters didn't know him by his real name. Most people called him Snag (a dental thing).

Charlie Rangle has been doing the same type of thing on a national level. It's been in the news for the past 4 months, and the chairman of the ways and means committee is still writing tax laws. Apparently, these laws don't apply to members of congress. Maybe Willis feels they don't apply to councilmen either.

Charlie Rangel is a disgrace and part of how corrupt the system is. He is probably the poster child for term limits. Once you are from a certain red or blue district and have so many years in now body can raise enough money to compete with you from your party in a primary and the opposite party can't win.

everyone here knows he is a dem doesn't make it any worse. Review my posts I never talk about party except when talking in terms of groups of people and hypocrisy.

Translation for justus4.......they are black, give them a PASS.

Charlie Rangel hasn't been on the front line saying if a person has tax issues they can't govern etc. Mark Sanford said Bill Clinton couldn't govern because of his affair but I haven't seen his resignation yet that is hypocrisy.

He was referring to Bush's tax cuts under a repub congress. He didn't take advantage of loopholes he just screwed up which is why Pelosi need to pull his chairmanship. If the people of Harlem elect him she can't do anything about that.
