Aiken Prep records its first state title
In Aiken, Aiken Prep edged Covenant 3-2 Friday in the SCISA Class A finals to claim its first state championship.
Zach Harrington and Weston Peters scored in the first half, staking Aiken Prep to a 2-1 lead. Ryan Grefenstette and Kyle Wyszynski had assists.
Aiken Prep went up 3-1 a minute into the second half on an own goal.
On the own goal, Aiken Prep's Carlton Norwood drove to the Covenant goal. After making a hard cross, a Covenant player tried to clear the ball and accidentally kicked the ball into his own goal.
Covenant, of Columbia, scored 10 minutes into the half to cut it to 3-2, but the Aiken Prep defense held.
Jessie Morton made 11 saves for Aiken Prep, which finished the season 10-0.
Golf
Montano's team ties for 2nd place
In St. Simons Island, Ga., a team with an Augusta connection tied for second in the Georgia Women's Team Championship.
Augusta's Elaine Montano and Lee Burton , of St. Simons Island, closed with 5-under-par 66 at Sea Palms Golf Resort and finished at 140 for the two-day event, one shot out of a playoff.
Danielle Davis, of St. Simons Island, and Ginette Spinucci, of Stone Mountain, had 67 to win the title at 139.
First-round leaders Darlene Werhnyak , of Lawrenceville, and Cheryl Grigg , of Sea Island, also tied for second.
Werhnyak-Grigg shot 71-69 for their 140.
Augusta's Mary Helen McElreath and Waynesboro's Sandra Moody shot 77-70--147 to tie for ninth place; and Evans' Jan Cross and Alpharetta's Sherrie Tindle shot 77-75--152 to finish 10th.
- The Augusta State golf teams play their second events of the fall season this weekend. Both finished 10th in their season-openers.
The men tee off in the 54-hole Gary Koch Invitational today in Tampa, Fla., while the women begin play Sunday in the 36-hole Eat A Peach Collegiate at Idle Hour in Macon, Ga.
The men's traveling team consists of Henrik Norlander, Mitch Krywulycz, Carter Newman, Jacob Carlsson and Taylor Floyd . That is the same lineup as the season opener, with the exception of Carlsson, who takes the place of Jake Amos .
The Lady Jaguars will play the same five as they did in their season opener: Tamara Luccioli, Sarah Mooney, Jula Stalbro, Natalie Wille and Jordyn Hage .

USC Aiken rebounds by sweeping Lander
One night after losing to rival Augusta State, USC Aiken rebounded with a 3-0 sweep of Lander to end a four-game losing streak.
The Lady Pacers (11-8, 3-4 Peach Belt Conference), who were led by Shannon Byers ' 14 digs, won 25-21, 25-23 and 25-11.

Lady Pacers' Linde continues her run
In Clinton, S.C., USC Aiken finished fourth in the Blue Hose Invitational behind Jani Linde .
Linde came in fifth at 20 minutes, 41 seconds for her fifth consecutive top-10 finish.
Savannah College of Art & Design won the meet with a team average of 20:22.80.
USC Aiken's average was 23:19.80.
Boxing
Warrant issued for Mayweather's uncle
A Las Vegas judge on Friday issued an arrest warrant for Roger Mayweather after the boxing trainer failed to show up for a court appearance on battery and coercion charges.
Mayweather coached his nephew Floyd Mayweather Jr. to victory in a September comeback fight against Juan Manuel Marquez.
Judge Joe Sciscento issued the warrant after he called Mayweather's name and case number from a list and nobody in the court acknowledged him.
