OCCUPATION: License inspector, Augusta-Richmond County

DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT: March 1986; mastectomy, spiritual, better nutrition

HER STORY

She was 27 when her husband found the lump. She'd found cysts in her breast tissue since she was 16, so she didn't think it was cancer.

Neither did her doctor, but her husband insisted. She underwent a lumpectomy to remove the mass, which lab results showed was cancerous.

"When I first heard cancer, my thought was (I was) dying. But I realized I had two beautiful children to live for, so I had my cry and quickly moved on to living."

She's been cancer-free for 23 years.
