This is one amazing team. I can't remember a defense like this ever.
After not one but two first-half goal-line stands Friday night, Lakeside's defense felt confident that it would maintain the team's streak of not allowing an opponent to get on the scoreboard all season.
As it turned out, the streak came to an end in the Panthers' dominant 43-7 victory over Harlem. But it was the offense that was the culprit, as a botched snap in the end zone led to the Bulldogs' only points.
"Our coach just stared at our quarterback, smiled and said, 'Come on.' " joked senior defensive captain Chris Tynan.
The Panthers (4-0, 4-0 Region 3-AAAA) produced their highest point total of the season, thanks in large part to quarterback Ben Wilson.
The junior's night was complete with lengthy passing plays, as he hooked up with his receivers on seven different completions of at least 27 yards.
Wilson recovered after throwing an interception on his first pass attempt to finish with 216 passing yards on just eight completions. Ben Brooks led the way with two receptions for 72 yards, while Mark Weidenaar added two catches for 54 yards.
"We just have that chemistry," Wilson said of his receiving corps. "They're so athletic. I can just throw it up there, and they will catch it."
The Panthers' defensive effort strengthened throughout the first half and intensified more after halftime.
Lakeside allowed just 39 yards and one first down in the second half.
"We think we have the fastest defense in the region," Tynan said. "We might not be the strongest, but we're the fastest."
Harlem amassed 114 rushing yards on its first two drives, but the attack stalled inside the Lakeside 10-yard line. Senior quarterback Zach Morris rushed 18 times for 73 yards, but he struggled in the passing game, finishing with just 15 yards and throwing an interception.
The Bulldogs got their lone touchdown early in the second quarter when Domonique Taylor recovered the Panthers' botched snap in the end zone.
That tied the game at 7, but Chris Hartfield's 2-yard touchdown minutes later put the Panthers ahead for good. Hartfield had just two carries for 3 yards, but he scored a touchdown on both runs.
Ricky McMurtrey started the scoring for Lakeside with a 2-yard touchdown plunge in the first quarter, and he added a 27-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter.
Senior Khadi Tshishiku had the Panthers' lone interception and produced one of Lakeside's two blocked punts.
LAKESIDE 43, HARLEM 7

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Wilson shrugged off the interception to throw for two scores and run for another. The junior finished with 216 passing yards and 51 more on the ground.
WHY LAKESIDE WON: The Panthers produced a pair of goal-line stands, moved the ball consistently on offense and blocked two punts.
WHY HARLEM LOST: The Bulldogs fell victim to the big pass play all night, as Panthers receivers hauled in seven receptions of at least 27 yards. In addition, Harlem's rush-heavy attack stalled in the second half.

Go Panthers! So nice to see them winning.
The whole team is playing great, including the O-Line. Great coverage last night guys!
If Lakeside is so great in all aspect of the game. How about playing Harlem's way. 13 varsity players playing both ways for 4 quarters and see how you fare. And for this we thank Columbia County rezoning to accomodate a new hig school.
I love Harlem, too, but there are only 11 players on the field at once. 13 players can't play both ways all the time.
It's great to see them play good again... they haven't played this well since I was in school there in the late 90's. It all started when Coach Hill took over. This new coach is something special for sure
To the Harlem nutcase, who wrote the paper complaining because Lakeside blocked a punt in the last 5 minutes, while
leading by around 40 points...Not much Coach Grooms could have done about it...They'd already blocked another punt. I don't care if you did play 40 yrs. ago, I don't think any coach can
guarantee that a player wont be able to break through and block
a punt, no matter what the score is...Did you really expect Lakeside players just to lie down and stop trying? Don't mistake me for a Lakeside fan...I'm an Aquinas High fan. We've taken our fair share of bad beatings past...Get over the sour grapes..
