Making a hole-in-one in consecutive rounds is a rare feat in itself.
Evans' Scott Sewell recently did that, but with an added degree of difficulty.
One of his aces came on a par-4 hole.
The first ace -- and the first of his golfing career -- came on the 165-yard par-3 fourth hole at Sewell's home course, West Lake Country Club, on July 22.
Five weeks later, in his next round, Sewell became the first golfer in the 24-year history of Jones Creek Golf Club to ace the par-4 16th hole.
On that dogleg left hole, Sewell cut the corner of the dogleg, flying his tee shot over a grove of tall trees, and somehow made the shot.
The hole measures 328 yards from the white tees, but by cutting the corner, Sewell estimates his shot was "275 or 285 yards, but who knows?"
"It was total disbelief," Sewell said of his reaction when he found his ball in the hole. "I thought, 'you've got to be kidding.' It never entered my mind that it was there."
The Jones Creek ace happened on Aug. 29, and Sewell hasn't played since.
"It's been a lot of fun to say my last two rounds I've had a hole-in-one," he said. "I'm really busy, and I'm not having this huge urge to go back out there. It's been this sense of fulfillment: back to back hole-in-ones."
No one in Sewell's group at Jones Creek -- Ray Breeze and Langdon Roberts -- knew Sewell had scored an ace at West Lake in his previous round.
Sewell, who is 43, did mention the fact on the first tee to the organizers of the church tournament he was playing in.
"I was joking around with those guys. I said, 'you know, the last time I played, I made a hole-in-one.' "
The tournament used a Captain's Choice format, where the best drive is used on each hole. That would have been Sewell's tee shot on No. 16 -- if they could find it.
After looking in the trees and around the green and failing to find it, Breeze wanted Sewell to check the hole.
"I said, 'I'm not going to go look in the hole; it's not in there,' " Sewell said.
As a last resort, Sewell decided to look behind the green, thinking perhaps the ball "hit hot and ran down there" into a swale.
It hadn't.
"When it wasn't there, I had pretty much given up on my search," Sewell said.
The second-best drive on the hole -- the one the team would use if they couldn't find Sewell's ball -- was toward the front of the green.
"Walking to it, I was going to go right by the flag, so I walk by real fast and I glanced in and my momentum took me a couple of steps past the hole," Sewell said. "And I backed up and looked down and all I could see was 'Titleist 4.'"
There's more twists and turns to the story.
Sewell's ace at West Lake had come on the same hole he'd witnessed his first ace, by his friend, Vince Brawley, two years earlier.
And his ace on No. 16 at Jones Creek came on a hole "I never really liked -- until now," he said.
While Sewell had never had a hole-in-one in his 21 years of playing serious golf before his recent aces, he had made a double eagle on a par-5.
It came 10 years ago at Spring Valley Country Club in Columbia.
"So, since a hole-in-one on a par-4 is also a double eagle, that second hole-in-one (at Jones Creek) also ended up being my second double eagle," Sewell said.
