Hand bell ensembles to perform at Paine chapel

Festival Bells & Brass will be staged at 4 p.m. today at Gilbert-Lambuth Memorial Chapel at Paine College, 1235 15th St.

The event will feature three hand bell ensembles from Covenant Presbyterian Church, First Baptist Church of Augusta and Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church in addition to hand bell soloist and guest conductor Sueda Luttrell.

Mrs. Luttrell is an organist and music associate for University Baptist Church in Fort Worth, Texas, and has been a solo ringer since 1995. Ringing on your own takes added responsibility and coordination, she said. In today's concert, she'll be the sole ringer on three songs.

"It's very musically satisfying because you have one person in control of the whole line," she said.

The performances will include other instruments in various songs, including a brass quartet, piano and a percussionist. That enriches the sound, said Larry Abernathy, the director of music at Reid Memorial Church.

One song Mrs. Lutrell will perform is Grazioso, by contemporary composer Arnold Sherman. The song was written about a woman's life cut short by cancer. The performance will also include an interpretive dance by Julia Foley Morgan.
