Anti-socialism letter was chilling
Letter to the Editor
Saturday, September 19, 2009

The letter from Jim McGaughy in the Sept. 13 paper ("Here's a proposal to stop socialism") would be laughable if it were not serious. The proposals outlined in the letter should make everyone shudder.

Taking the FDIC proposal: First, the FDIC is not taxpayer funded. I, as a resident of Glascock County where the local bank failed earlier in the year, was very grateful that the FDIC was there. In less than a week I had my deposits back in hand.

The other proposals are ludicrous. Read some history of what it was like before Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. No one can seriously want to return to the days before those programs.

So it is "tough luck, buddy" if you don't have health insurance? That's callous to say the least.

Also, I hate to remind the writer that segregation was both morally and ultimately legally wrong.

And this letter is the one The Augusta Chronicle chose to make the "featured letter."
