Rep. Joe Wilson deserves our thanks

  • Follow Letters

I am appalled by your editorial page of Sept. 12, in which Rep. Joe Wilson is, I believe, repeatedly defamed in two letters to the editor.

I am certain the majority of Americans do not condone the outburst made by Joe Wilson when he called the president a liar during his recent address to Congress. Only frustration could push a respected member of Congress to such an outburst. Only the need to voice his opinion in an increasingly politically correct society, where we rename the most horrendous day in America a "day of service," could have forced him to such an extreme.

It is a very sad state of affairs when Americans feel their voices are not being heard. Joe Wilson spoke for a large number of Americans on the floor of Congress the other night. He spoke for those of us who are tired of back-door dealings and double-wording. His words forced the Senate committees to reconvene immediately to rewrite portions of their bill to prevent embarrassment to the administration.

We need more Joe Wilsons in Congress -- men and women who are not afraid to stand up for what they see as right; men and women who are not afraid of the consequences of defending the liberties and freedoms we all cherish. Ethics and fair play always will trump lawyeristic phrases with footnote wording, purposefully hidden in extra-small print for later interpretation.

I respect Wilson's apology, and I respect his willingness to defend our liberties by telling it like it is. Congress was elected to serve the people, and polls show the majority of Americans feel they are not doing their jobs. Instead of slandering Joe Wilson for revealing a truth, we should be thanking him for bringing it to our attention.

BobGatliff--So you must live

BobGatliff--So you must live in LALA Land.? ???/ Take a look around you at all the poverty, the people that have very little health care look where you rank in education. So you think WE NEED MORE PEOPLE LIKE JOE WILSON????? Again take a look around you. What are you drinking or smoking????South Carolina and Georgia rank very low in almost everything. If they are in the top 10 in ANYTHING please let me know. This is a reflection on who you elect as your POLITICIANS. Maybe you people should go cross the border to North Carolina or Florida and see how your neighbor states are.

Well said Cordie. SC & GA

Well said Cordie. SC & GA get what we deserve. We send clowns like Demint, Graham, Isaakson, Chambliss, P Broun, and Joe Wilson to represent us. What do we have to show for it. They take care for the haves although they are from states that have majority have nots. They throw out a few wedge issues guns, abortions, immigration, etc of which none have had major changes in the last 25 years. And their saint Reagan was responsible for the last amnesty for illegals. The people vote on those dead issues and get left behind in economic development and healthcare.

They have a way of getting the ignorant people all worked up and go about their merry way. Mr. Wilson obviously has no respect for authority and should be ran out of Washington AND SC.

Yes, thank you for showing us how classless you are. Thank you for letting us know how clueless your supporters are. Thank you for letting us know that the majority of Americans put the right people in the White House and other elected offices. Thank you for being face of why we should elect more Democrats. Thank you.

here we go again tigger. so now you want to replace the president, with what, more bush? cuz those were some good ol' days right? gimmie a break!! people like you are so full of crap. give me one good reason why we should replace a president who was elected by a landslide and has been in office for only 9 months when our last president stole an election twice and almost everyone hated him. yet we gave him the benefit of the doubt. this guy hasn't even finished a year and youre already saying off with his head. you and the joe wilsons and kks all know the real reason but this country's full of cowards and bs!

Wilson has been a Congressman

Wilson has been a Congressman since 2001 and in the SC Senate before then. What positive steps has he take toward health care reform before shooting his mouth off during the President's speech? He is nothing more than a grandstander.

tigger; Since you are

tigger; Since you are clueless on the issues and have been proven wrong time and again, yet still cling to your disproven theories, I would say debating the issues with you is pointless. Still will counter with the facts in case someone who doesn't know any better thinks you know what you're talking about.

JQP: Wilson has pulled the

JQP: Wilson has pulled the same cr*p before. In '02 he called Rep Bob Filner a liar and said he hated America when Filner rightly said the US sold Saddam chemical weapon technology. Wilson also claimed that Essie Mae Washington-Williams was lying when she said that she was Strom Thurmond's daughter. He then changed it to "It's a smear on the image that [Thurmond] has as a person of high integrity who has been so loyal to the people of South Carolina" when he was proven wrong. Wilson's 0 for 3, you'd think he'd learn to shut up.

"who was elected by a

"who was elected by a landslide" - mommy715 on Sat Sep 19, 2009 7:43 AM. This president was elected with only a 6% margin. How can anyone say, Landslide. It might only have been 4% if ACORN hadn't padded the count.

Classy is NOT calling the

Classy is NOT calling the white police officer a name, defending your friend while not knowing the facts (prezbo)... Classy is not calling your opponents liars and saying you will 'call out' those that disagree with you (prezbho)... Classy is not threatening and attacking the US citizens because they disagree with you(prezbho)... Classy is not calling someone a 'jackass' (prezbho)... Classy is not calling citizens names (pelosi and reid)... If we're going to get into who is not classy, we must include the obvious classless.

Every reputable authority has

Every reputable authority has noted that Wilson was wrong, that the proposed bill did not fund illegal aliens. It does require illegal aliens to buy insurance at their own expense. The CBO study did not say that illegals would be funded, just that the admnistration would need to implement a routine enforcement procedure, which obviously would have happened anyway.Since conservatives claim to be big on history, remember that it was Reagan who signed the law that requires hospitals to care for illegal alliens at public expense. In 2004, Bush and McCain both advocated amnesty for illegal immigrants. That was back in the good old days when Republicans were trying to woo the Hispanic vote. I figure that the proposed health plan must be a good one; otherwise its opponents wouldn't need to invent falsehoods and distort truths in their efforts to fight it.
