Columbia County schools robbed over weekend

  • Follow Metro

Columbia County authorities say they think the same criminals might be behind weekend break-ins at two high schools in which TVs were taken.

Sheriff's Capt. Steve Morris said investigators see similarities between the burglaries at both Lakeside and Greenbrier high schools.

On Saturday , an assistant principal at Lakeside High School, 533 Blue Ridge Drive, said someone broke out the glass on the band room door and unlocked it . The room's office was ransacked.

The "only thing missing at this point is believed to be an older model, donated large screen TV that was in the band room," Principal Jeff Carney said in an e-mail.

An assistant principal at Greenbrier High School, 5114 Riverwood Parkway, told police that about 2 a.m. Sunday , two men used a ladder to break out the glass of a cafeteria door , according to an incident report. The men, who were visible on surveillance video, also used the ladder to break the glass front of a soda machine and to reach a television mounted on the wall in the main hall.

The video showed the men carrying out the television and loading it into a dark-colored, extended cab truck.

Greenbrier Principal Margie Hamilton said Monday that she did not have a damage estimate , but a police report listed the stolen television as worth $3,000.

It seems to me that schools

It seems to me that schools would be a good place for deputies to "hang out" at night when they are not on calls. Why not create substations in the schools and give them the keys?

The schools were burglarized,

The schools were burglarized, not robbed. There is a HUGE difference. I don't know how it works in Col. Co., but last I was told, the BOE police in Richmond Co. do not even have keys to the schools. A better question to ask is, "why don't the schools have alarms?"

All schools need silent

All schools need silent alarms and also security cameras. Some of these punks robbing the schools probably never paid much attention when they were in school, that's why they are out stealing from them. Perhaps this person or persons needs to go back to school, get an education and get a real frigging job....

There was no estimate listed

There was no estimate listed in the story of the value of the older TV stolen from Lakeside. The $3,000 was for the one stolen from Greenbrier.

You are "robbed" when someone

You are "robbed" when someone takes it from your person. The schools were burglarized. Augusta49 must not be a cop.

The county does have deputies

The county does have deputies that patrol there on a regular basis.
Perhaps the schools will lock the access gates in the future. It would be difficult to carry a large screen TV to the main road! Hope they catch them!

As for the alarm.... sounds

As for the alarm.... sounds like it is a zone-style where you can have some hallways/doors on and others off. Sounds like the thieves knew which doors were unarmed and went for that. The school my church worships in, the lobby/gym/cafeteria/band room area is unarmed and the classroom hallways are armed.

a bank is robbed, but nothing is taken off of a person. geez, who cares what word is used? next time, when a bank is robbed.....maybe it'll say burglarized, because money was not taken off of a person. this is so stupid and funny.
