The same tire that once littered a grass lot on Bohler Avenue now has an array of herbs growing from its center.

The Harrisburg Community Garden, in the 600 block of Bohler Avenue, has shown what the combination of hard work and nature can accomplish, said Denice Traina, who started the garden in August 2008. On Saturday, Mrs. Traina and the Unitarian Universalist Church helped celebrate the success of the garden and bless future cultivation at the Harrisburg Harvest celebration.

"There was nothing but overgrown grass, tires and debris here when we started," she said during the celebration. "Now we have this interfaith and communitywide gift for the whole neighborhood."

Supporters from the Christian, Muslim and Unitarian communities donated the irrigation system, bird feeders and other materials for the garden. Assembly of God donated the lot and water supply, Mrs. Traina said.

She and others have harvested cucuzzi, sweet potatoes, cantaloupe, peppers and herbs.

"There are so many people that walk through here, so they can come through and take whatever they need," she said. "With the economy the way it is, it's important for us to go back to what we know works."

Wiccan High Priest Joe Zuchowski led songs and provided a blessing over the garden during the ceremony. He prayed that the garden would be bountiful with the four elements -- air, water, earth and fire.

"The fire is for the will, and the earth, of course, for the garden to grow," he said. "We wanted to bless this that it would continue to grow, and that all in this community would appreciate what has been done here."

Plant A Garden
"If your purse no longer bulges

and you've lost your golden treasure,
If times you think you're lonely
and have hungry grown for pleasure,
Don't sit by your hearth and grumble,
don't let mind and spirit harden.
If it's thrills of joy you wish for
get to work and plant a garden!

If it's drama that you sigh for,
plant a garden and you'll get it
You will know the thrill of battle
fighting foes that will beset it
If you long for entertainment and
for pageantry most glowing,
Plant a garden and this summer spend
your time with green things growing."

- Edgar Guest, 1881-1959

Great job Denice. One day hopefully Harrisburg will truly be able to appreciate this garden.

Harrisburg Homeowner

I envision that one day we will have many more green spaces in Harrisburg where flower gardens and vegetable gardens alike will flourish and sustain our residents.

Okay. I live in Harrisburg. First, why is First Assembly, associating with Wiccans? These are pagan worshiping scum. Dont let them tell you that theyre not witches. They are. They claim to "worship the earth".If that were true they need to be six feet under it.My ex got into wicca. I kicked her butt out.Notice they say "blessed be" and not God Bless?Secondly,John Moore, pastor of Assembly of God is one of Harrisburgs biggest slumlords.Ask anyone who rents from him. His puppet-boy Baxter Stanley,is ready to fill his shoes.OMG

Nice expression of love, there.

Religion is religion...personally I don't think any of them really help people. They seem to most concerned with setting up building funds and taking your money! ALL OF THEM, including pagan & wicca, Assembly of God etc. They all require you buy stuff: candles, crystals, books to read from their "stores" so you know what you NEED to parrot/regurgitate to other members of said religious group. My money goes to helping people learn how to help themselves and to build hospitals. I figure we have enough darned churches!
