Here's a proposal to stop socialism

  • Follow Letters

I have read many letters sent in to The Chronicle, and editorials by the paper, concerning how socialism is destroying our country primarily since the liberals came upon the scene in the 1930s. I think I have a plan to correct this growing problem in our country:

First, as of today, no one can enroll in the Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid programs. People in the programs will continue, but as they pass on, the programs will decrease and be phased out.

The large socialistic projects, such as the Tennessee Valley Authority, will be sold by the government to private companies and operated on a for-profit basis.

The Department of Education will be shut down because we know what's best for educating our children. If we want to teach tobacco farming and religion in our classrooms, it should be left up to us (I hate to remind people that the way the federal people got a foot in the door in our educational system was partly because of our segregated schools).

Of course, the money from Washington stops.

Farm subsidies end (the large corporate farm operations get most of them anyhow).

The FDIC, the outfit that insures your bank deposits, will close down. If you have money in the bank, you probably ought to get it out and put it under your mattress.

The local governments -- city, county and state -- will take over the streets and roads and, because we can maintain our roads better, will get the potholes taken care of quickly.

No more bailouts for General Motors and Chrysler and the financial outfits. If you can't compete in the free enterprise system, you probably aren't building the cars people want and, in the case of banks. not handling the money as you should.

As for health care: If you work for a company that provides it, that's great. If the company you work for is too small to provide it -- tough luck, buddy. We're getting this country out of this mess.

This is not a complete plan, but I'm sure that the letter writers and editorial writers can add their ideas to make it even better. Then we'll be back to the capitalistic system that made this country great. We've learned our lesson.

Nice try at silliness but

Nice try at silliness but absolutely ridiculous. First, no one says that the social security administration, department of education, etc. is socalism. However, the SSA has been and continues to be greatly abused as it was origionally designed to pay back to those who put into it bue Washington (it its normal wisdon) decided to give to others and borrow from the program. The federal government has the duty to provide services such as naitonal security, public safety, government oversight, infrastructure, and education os many of your above suggestions, although sarcastic in nature as ridiculous. However, you are right about doing aways with every single socalist policy that takes money from the working to give to the able bodied american that doesn't work or has more children for more tax credits. Of course we should take care of the elderly who have contributed all of their lives and those who are handicapped and unable. But, EBT Cards, Section 8 homes, government homes, tax credits, and all other money given to abled bodied Americans is merely enabling them to become dependent on those who pay taxes instead of being held personaly responsible and acountable - socalism!!

Socialism is a theory of

Socialism is a theory of political organization under which government owns the means of production and distribution. Let's agree to use words accurately.

Let's stop quibbling. We all

Let's stop quibbling. We all know that America leaning toward socialism(it's not) is not the problem. The simple fact that we have to chosen to rise up in opposition to EVERYTHING the Obama administration proposes is because he's a Black man. WE hate HIM because we see him as a threat to a society that is becoming less and less White owned and operated. Racism and bigotry are not dead in America. They are just as prevalent as ever. Even though it has become more difficult to say it out loud, we all know how we feel. I believe we will be better served if we admit the truth about what we feel and get on with our rush to return to the 18th century, when White men held our rightful position in America. WE built this country,(except for the part that was done by Chinese and Blacks and Hispanics) and we shouldn't have to share it with anybody.

mefirst - That card is played

mefirst - That card is played out. You can't use it as an excuse forever. For 150 years it's been "whitey man been holding us down". Well okay, now you got a man of color who is doing nothing to help you, so back to blaming whitey, huh? I'm tired of this whiney crap. Obama is a Socialist - he admits it. I agree that many of his administration's policies are not his ideas, but he goes along with whatever his puppet masters tell him to do. Accept the real problem.

MeFirst, you are either a

MeFirst, you are either a racist, illogical individual or combination of both. Sure, there are some that don't like Obama because he is black and there are just as many that didn't like or vote for McCain because he was white - who cares, those are the few idiots that we will have on the fringes of both sides due to organizations such as the KKK or NAACP and others. The bottom line is that many of the working citiznes of America of all races are absoultely FED UP with the government taking from those of us who work hard to give more to those who are able bodied Americans that don't. Most who disagree with the policies of this administration are far more upset with the real problem which is Congress and many within congress to inlcude Pelosi, Reid, Frank, etc. These enablers, including Obama are taking away personal responsibility and acountability and replacing it with dependency on the government. Do you really want that knowing the Republicans will again be in charge one day? I don't wont it no matter who is in charge. If you want an ALL BLACK Leadership, lets get rid of Pelosi, Frank, and Reid and replace them with Michael Steel, Herman Cain & Alan Keys - Take all of them

The FDIC is being abused by

The FDIC is being abused by the government right now because the Fed, Congress and the Clinton and Bush Administrations created the housing and credit "crises". Bank customers are paying an increasing tax to restore confidence in the banks that were abused. The Fed is rewarding banks with a .025% interest rate to make up for the Fed's primary role in the crisis. The 1% rate for 1 year made the credit markets explode. Wall Street and the banks were raking in the fees on sub-prime loans and passing on risks to the taxpayers (Fannie, Freddie and now Ginnie for school loans). Social Security is a Ponzi scheme according to a leading scholar - Dr Williams happens to be black. Another leading scholar - Dr Thomas Sowell (also black) - has explained how we got here in his 2009 book. Bush had several czars - like a drug czar - but Obama has taken "special assistants" to the extreme. Check the folks who he chose to have vast power - like Van Jones. How about Obama's buddy Hugo Chavez? Should we really stimulate ACORN with over $8B/year? Should we unilaterally apologize to the world for our past actions? We probably should apologize to Japan since we owe them $1T. How about China?

Those like Pelosi and Reid

Those like Pelosi and Reid support these socialist programs because they have wealth guilt. They feel guilty because they have and some others don't. The right thing to do is to contribute your wealth, not everyone elses. There were plenty of wealthy and non-wealthy alike who donated to worthy causes all over the country and abroad. Charitable organizations are seeing a decline in contributions since it is clear that the liberal government wants to take away more money so they can decide who to distribute it to. They don't want you to be in control of YOUR money because they feel they can be in control of it much better than you.

Great letter, Mr. Gaughy.

Great letter, Mr. Gaughy. Good follow-up, mefirst. And Ahsan Minnik, you have a kindergarten grasp of history, sociology, political science, and psychology. Who needs nuance when he can speak of "puppet masters" (without elaboration)?

MeFirst, You play games with

MeFirst, You play games with words. The word "racism" has been abused, so instead of a minority saying a situation/person is racist, a white person has more credibility calling it out. That's what I like about Howard Stern, Chris Matthews, Bill Maher, and John McCain, they don't mind silencing the 100% deniers of racism. it does exist, and the bitterness of the fact BHO is POTUS feeds the flames. Not all who oppose him do so because of race, but some absolutely do. And those who do are fed by media outlets hiding behind the term"entertainment", which removes them from responsibility. Sean Hannity is a perfect example. His affiliation and support for white supremacist like Hal Turner exposes his true color and motives for his daily obsession against the president. "Take your country back"? What? Two questions: 1.What are you doing different today that you weren't doing four years ago as a result of some loss of "country? Four years ago you went to the grocery store weekly and bought eggs, bread and milk. What? You can't buy eggs, bread, and milk today? 2. Could you have sold your country instead of it being stolen? If you aren't a racist take no offense this isn't about U!

General Motors, Chrysler and

General Motors, Chrysler and to a lesser extent Ford did not listen to Dr Deming in the 1950s. Japan implemented his theories on statistical quality control and began making a superior product. Ford later used Dr Deming's teaching and produced the successful Taurus. The government's idea is to bailout failing businesses. Capitalism allows restructuring under Chapter 11. The companies don't vanish, they get a second chance. The US now owns parts or the auto, banking, insurance, etc. industries. Gov't ownership of the means of production is the essence of socialism. Look at the success by the unemployment rate. Obama claimed that it would not top 8%

Lastly MeFirst, if WE are

Lastly MeFirst, if WE are racist that's OUR problem, not the person we are against...I have always said the battle about whether someone is/isn't led by a obese general riding a swayback horse to boot. He rides between the lines of both armies rallying the mindless masses who choose to fight about something that doesn't matter unless the person who dislikes you because of some racist reason is in a positon to affect you physically or finacially. Here in the south it's just a wore out battle that been fought too many times...People aren't going to admit it if they are for the most part, and unless they are in control of something that matters who cares that is their problem...Lastly, everytime a democrat since and including Roosevelt has became the POTUS he has been accused of a being a socialist...Same song today, same waltz, same battle for the current POTUS,and the general of the socialist accusers like the previous described instigator is obese; however he is riding a MULE, and being from the country I can tell you how you breed a mule...You fence up a horse and a jackass and let boredom and nature take its course!

MEFIRST, you're right...racism and bigotry aren't dead. Your posts prove that. Mr. Obama is glad that this country has positively evolved though. White voters put him into office. Now it's up to him whether he stays there or not. Right now, things aren't looking too good.

^^^The first responsibility

^^^The first responsibility of any PTOUS is to keep America safe, and so far he has done that, and by doing that that's enough for me. GWB gets my respect for that too. As far as what BHO has done, well, he won the election, makes daily decisions that affect our country, citizens, and troops overseas, signed the Ledbetter Wage Bill, the State Children's Insurance Program, Cash for Clunkers, the Stimulus Bill, etc. I give him no praise, but I support him because he is the president, you should do the same. For a president that hasn't done anything by your definition you sure have alot to complain about him doing. If he hasn't done anything then what's the problem and what are you complaining about? What he may do? Well, that's silly if that's the case, because unless you got a billboard in your front yard with a gigantic red palm on it you can't see the future!

Perhaps Mr. McGaughy (or one

Perhaps Mr. McGaughy (or one of his enlightened followers) would be so kind as to explain the difference between privatization and homemade socialism. Then we might begin to understand why "socialism" provokes anger while "privatization" brings warm and radiant smiles to the faces of Republican Depends packers. [Note: this letter writer is on the right track about "farm" subsidies, the rankest of all corporate welfare schemes that a "capitalist" society could possibly perpetuate.]

Nativeson...what has he done

Nativeson...what has he done to make you safe? Someone makes you sit in a lions den and you manage to not get eaten for a while, do you say that the person who sent you there is keeping you safe? Explain what Obama has done that has kept you safe. As for supporting him just because he is the President.............NONSENSE. I took an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against ALL enemies, foreign AND domestic. (an oath that Obama took as well) This man has already said the doesn't like the very Constitution that I am sworn to defend, and that he wants to change it. THAT makes him a domestic enemy of the United States. I will not support that.

You should ask yourself what

You should ask yourself what he has done to make you unsafe...Disdain will be met with disdain, condemnation with condemnation...The Constitution is safe and under no longer under attack. The biggest threat to the Constitution has already occured via the Military Commissions Act of 2006. SEE above for further discussion responses, unlike MANY I don't sit at my computer all day crossing philangical sabers with people, I say what I got to say then I rollout! Enjoy! HOLLA! oh, btw, you and I both have taken oaths, and I couldn't agree with you more about fighting our enemies; however, seems like we a little hazy on who on the domestic side the enemy is..Sedition! Sedition I say!

I'm certain our current

I'm certain our current president has the best of intention, just as all Marxists do, but reality just keeps getting in the way. The hard lean toward fascism seems to be taking the historical path from the Marxist efforts. More and more control or ownership by the federal government is the "unintended consequence" to this train of "thought". Socialism/Marxism/fascism is all based on the assumption that the government know best how you should spend your money and live your life. Personal responsibility means being a good government product and individualism is a swear word. Plenty of countries have chosen this path, but America was settled and populated by those that reject it.

What has he done to make us unsafe...well, he plans to close Gitmo and bring our enemies back here. He wants to sit and have unconditional talks with people who want us and Israel wiped off the map. He said he wants unilateral nuclear disarmament. He killed funding for the raptor. shall I go on?

He allowed the Lockerby

He allowed the Lockerby bomber to be returned to Libya without so much as a peep from him. He watched as Iranian protesters are beaten in the street, but didn't want to upset his new Iranian friend by denouncing it in any way. He bowed to a foreign King, showing subservience He refuses to let us drill for our own oil, therefore keeping us dependent on the oil of our enemies. The list goes on and on and on.

Could someone PLEASE explain

Could someone PLEASE explain how confiscating money from productive people who earn it and giving it to able bodied people who refuse to work is a good system? Where is the incentive to work? What happens when you run out of people to take your money from because they either leave, or join those who are reaping the same benefits with less effort and zero responsibility? Anyone?
