Augusta's concert calendar has two additions, with R&B star R. Kelly set to perform Sunday, Oct. 25, at the Bell Auditorium, and legendary Southern rock act Lynyrd Skynyrd to perform Thursday, Nov. 12 at the James Brown Arena.
Tickets for both shows will go on sale at 10 a.m. on Sept. 18. Tickets for the R. Kelly show will cost $48-$67. Tickets for the Lynrdy Skynrd concert are $39.50-$55. See www.csratix.com.
Mr. Kelly, born Robert Kelly, is best known for his distinctive blend of hip-hop, soul and funk. His 1993 album, 12 Play , sold more than 5 million copies and produced the hits Sex Me and Bump 'n Grind .
Mr. Kelly is credited for discovering 15-year-old Aaliyah and recording her debut album, Age Ain't Nothing But a Number , in 1994.
Since 2005 he released, in chapters, an extended form music video, Trapped In the Closet . Mr. Kelly is touring in support of a new album, Untitled , scheduled for an Oct. 13 release.
Lynyrd Skynyrd, best known for Southern hits including Freebird and Sweet Home Alabama , released its first album, pronounced leh-nerd skinnerd , in 1973. In 1977, a plane carrying the band crashed near Gillsburg, Miss., killing lead singer and principal songwriter Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines and back-up singer Cassie Gaines.
The band reformed for a single gig in 1979 and then on a permanent basis, with Mr. Van Zant's younger brother, Johnny, taking over as lead vocalist in 1987.
The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005. It continues to tour and record, with Mr. Van Zant and founding member Gary Rossington at its core.
The band will be touring in support of a new album, God and Guns , scheduled for a Sept. 29 release.
