Area drug and alcohol treatment providers are teaming up Saturday for Race for Recovery in recognition of National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month.
"The alcohol- and drug-treatment providers in Augusta have never united to heighten public awareness of this important month until now," said Ken Wilson, the director of Steppingstones to Recovery, one of nine agencies participating.
Other agencies are Ace DUI, Americanwork, Awakening Center, Bradford Health, Coordinated Health Services, The Insight Program, Hope House and West Care.
They came together late last year to form the Coalition for Addiction Recovery Awareness, Mr. Wilson said.
Saturday's event will feature a 5K run/walk race and a disc golf tournament. Other activities will include entertainment, a barbecue and picnic lunch, children's activities and prizes and giveaways.
Each of the agencies will have a booth with information about its services.
State Sen. Ed Tarver, D-Augusta, will speak briefly to kick off the event, and a mayoral proclamation will be presented, Mr. Wilson said.
"This event is where the community can come together and get information about drug treatment for themselves or for someone else," he said. "This is also a fundraiser to help people in need get treatment."
