USC Aiken adds 21 players for season
USC Aiken head coach Kenny Thomas has added 21 players -- 12 freshmen and nine transfers -- for the 2010 season.
Among the freshman class are three area players: first baseman Tripp Warrick (North Augusta), pitcher Taylor Grover (Midland Valley) and outfielder Dylan Durham (Strom Thurmond). Other freshman are outfielder Randy Sipp , infielders JJ Loker and Adam Spires ; infielder/pitcher Josh Miller ; and pitchers Ryan Milewski , Royce Nichols , Ryan Nichols , Jake Padgett and Gavin Scott .
The junior college newcomers are catcher Dustin Douglas , infielder Corey Warner ; outfielders Zach Kilday and Bill Rice ; pitcher/first baseman James Rawls; and pitchers Mark Henderson , Grimes Medlin , Steve Owens and Tracey Asbill .
Medlin and Rawls transferred from the University of South Caro-lina.

Celebrity event set for Midland Valley
The Midland Valley Area Chamber of Commerce Annual Gloria Busch Johnson Celebrity golf tournament will be held Friday at Midland Valley Country Club.
A silent auction and banquet are scheduled for tonight, beginning at 6:30. The tournament is set to begin at 8:30 a.m. Friday.

U.S. within one win of World Cup berth
In Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, the United States moved within a win of its sixth consecutive World Cup appearance, beating Trinidad and Tobago 1-0 on Ricardo Clark 's goal in the 62nd minute.
The U.S. (5-2-1) moved into first place in the final round of North and Central American and Caribbean qualifying with 16 points, two ahead of Honduras (4-2-1) and four in front of Mexico and Costa Rica (4-3).
- USC Aiken's Troy Watson was named the Peach Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week.
Watson assisted on both of USC Aiken's goals in a 3-2 loss to seventh-ranked Lynn on Friday.
- USC Aiken's home match with Anderson on Wednesday was postponed because of inclement weather. No makeup date has been set.
- In Misenheimer, N.C., Pfeiffer blanked the USC Aiken women 1-0 Wednesday.
Goalkeeper Nicole Westphal recorded seven saves for USC Aiken (1-2).

Iverson agrees on deal with Grizzlies
The Memphis Grizzlies admitted Wednesday that they have agreed in principle to a contract with Allen Iverson , hours after the guard tweeted that he was heading to Memphis.
- In Birmingham, Ala., Sam-ford player Jim Griffin was found dead in his dorm room.
A university news release indicates Griffin, a reserve forward, died in his sleep after playing in a pickup game and lifting weights Monday night.

Group pulls out of bidding for Coyotes
Ice Edge Holdings has formally pulled out of the bidding for the bankrupt Phoenix Coyotes but hinted it might try to buy the team later.
The Ice Edge departure leaves the NHL and Canadian billionaire James Balsillie as the only bidders for the franchise. Balsillie's bid is contingent on moving the team to Hamilton, Ontario.

American captures 11th stage in Vuelta
In Caravaca De La Cruz, Spain, American rider Tyler Farrar won the 11th stage of the Spanish Vuelta, and Spanish rider Alejandro Valverde remained the overall leader.
- In Rolla, Mo., Thor Hushovd , of Norway, won the third stage of the Tour of Missouri, outsprinting the pack in the final meters.
