Paine College President George C. Bradley advised students at the fall convocation Wednesday to think of themselves as the school's mascot -- a lion -- as they enter the 2009-2010 school year.
"A group of lions is a pride," he told the nearly packed house at Gilbert-Lambuth Memorial Chapel. "They overcome fears. We expect you to enter this year with pride and determination."
The 128th annual fall convocation officially starts the fall semester, and introduces the student body and alumni to newly hired staff and faculty. Dr. Bradley also presented his state-of-the-college address, emphasizing the importance of striving for excellence.
"Whether it's answering phones, creating memos or recruiting students, we must be supportive as we move toward accomplishing our goals," he said.
Mayor Deke Copenhaver provided the greeting. He invited the future graduates to use what they learn at Paine toward bettering Augusta.
"I am always so impressed by the talent of our young people," Mr. Copenhaver said. "You will become future business leaders, nonprofit leaders and political leaders that can make Augusta the city you want it to be."
Dr. Bradley said he hoped faculty, staff and alumni will help enhance facilities, increase fundraising and remain financially responsible in tough economic times. Their commitment affects whether students accomplish their educational goals, he said. He suggested faculty members apply for grants to provide the highest "intellectual resources" to students and enhance research in each field of study.
As significant as faculty and staff are to Paine's success, Dr. Bradley made his most fervent charge to the college's students.
"You will demand and dominate complex issues in society and create new fields of study," he said. "You will help make Paine College a premier liberal arts college in the region."
