Augusta club takes team championship

In Kingsland, Ga., Augusta Boxing Club members won seven gold medals and captured the team title in the Kingsland Labor Day Weekend Boxing Championships held Friday and Saturday.

Winners and their weight classes were: Willie Burns (60 pounds), K.J. Greene (65 pounds), Desmond Lyons (70 pounds), Kajon Greene (100 pounds), Justin Williams (140 pounds), Eric Leverette (150 pounds) and Marcus Hitman (super heavyweight).

Long shot captures the Pacific Classic

In Del Mar, Calif., long shot Richard's Kid came from next-to-last early and passed Einstein in the final few jumps to win Del Mar's signature $1 million Pacific Classic on Sunday.

Ridden by Mike Smith and trained by Bob Baffert -- both Hall of Famers -- Richard's Kid had a strong run through the stretch to provide the third-biggest upset in the Pacific Classic's 19-year history. Sent off at 24-1, he paid $50.80.

The Maryland-bred Richard's Kid beat the Brazilian-bred Einstein by a neck, with 5-2 favorite Rail Trip three-quarters of a length back in third.

- In Ruidoso Downs, N.M., Rainbow Derby winner Inseperable led a sweep for trainer Paul Jones with a victory by a neck over top qualifier Fantastic Corona Jr. in the $624,789 All American Derby.

Ridden by Cody Jensen , Inseperable covered the 440-yard distance in 21.096 seconds to edge Fantastic Corona Jr. while Royal Proclamation completed the sweep.

Jones won last year's All American Derby when Noconi defeated Heartswideopen .

- In Saratoga Springs, N.Y., heavily favored Hot Dixie Chick took command with three-sixteenths of a mile to run and easily won the $300,000 Spinaway Stakes for 2-year-old fillies by 13/4 lengths at Saratoga Race Course.

Rider returns after breaking his wrist

Levi Leipheimer is back in the saddle and set to compete in the Tour of Missouri, less than two months after breaking his right wrist in the Tour de France.

The weeklong stage race begins today with a 75-mile circuit in downtown St. Louis.

While on the mend, Leipheimer prepared to jump ship from the world's top-ranked Astana team along with Lance Armstrong , signing a two-year deal last week with Team RadioShack starting Jan. 1.

- In Alto De Aitana, Spain, Damiano Cunego , of Italy, won the eighth stage of the Spanish Vuelta with a powerful climb up the final ascent and Cadel Evans gained the overall race lead.

Cunego, riding for Lampre, finished the 127.2-mile mountain stage from Alzira to Aitana in 6 hours, 4 minutes, 54 seconds.

Evans finished fourth, 44 seconds off the pace, to take a two-second overall lead on Alejandro Valverde .

Powell wins 100 at Grand Prix in Italy

In Rieti, Italy, Asafa Powell ran the 100 meters in 9.99 seconds into a strong headwind at the Rieti Grand Prix, on the same track where the Jamaican star set a then-world record of 9.74 two years ago.

- In LaJolla, Calif., a college pole vaulter died after missing the landing pad during practice at the University of California, San Diego's La Jolla campus.

The San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office said 19-year-old Leon Roach landed head first on concrete during a training jump Saturday.

Dream miss chance to earn playoff spot

In Phoenix, DeWanna Bonner had 20 points and seven rebounds to help the Phoenix Mercury clinch the Western Conference's regular-season title with a 100-82 victory over the Atlanta Dream on late Saturday night.

The second-year Dream (17-15) missed a chance to secure a playoff berth.
