Brown family asks for help with giveaways

Last year, about 1,000 people left the James Brown Turkey Giveaway happy that they would be able to provide a proper Thanksgiving meal for their families.

The Rev. Al Sharpton (left) and Sen. Ed Tarver hand a turkey to Daisy Barnes. The Rev. Sharpton has been James Brown's stand-in at the giveaways for two years.

Deanna Brown Thomas expects the number of needy to grow this year. That's why she and her family are again asking the community for help to make sure few families return home empty-handed.

The Brown family is seeking donations through The Brown Family Children's Foundation, its charitable organization that funds the turkey giveaway and Christmas toy giveaway. Family members hope to raise $10,000 for the events, matching the amount last year, but they said they want more.

"It's not a good feeling having to turn people away," said Mrs. Thomas, one of the music icon's daughters and president of the foundation.

This will be year 19 for the annual giveaways, which Mr. Brown began in 1991. It will be the third year since the Godfather of Soul died on Christmas Day 2006.

Before his death, Mr. Brown footed the cost of the turkey and toy giveaways with help from private donations and sponsors. Mrs. Thomas said the events will continue, but community support is needed if they are to serve as many people as possible.

"We're going to do the best we can," she said. "I'd like to see us give away 2,000 turkeys. It's really, really rough out there now."

Depending on his schedule, Mrs. Thomas said, she expects the Rev. Al Sharpton to stand in for her father, as he has the past two years.

Mrs. Thomas said she hopes to expand the giving to other cities. Part of that will include an effort to get professional musicians to tour college campuses and put on seminars to get young people involved in music.

But the turkey and toy giveaways will always remain the focus, she said. They were near and dear to her father's heart.

"He was one of those folks who didn't have any food," Mrs. Thomas said. "Dad never forgot from whence he came."

Didn't James Brown record a song, "I Don't Want Nobody to Give Me Nothing. Open Up the Door. I'll Get It Myself."? His family doesn't seem to share his values.

This is funny. The family

This is funny. The family spends all their money (and his) fighting over all of Godfather's money and possessions and now they ask the public to finance their giveaway.

Again,no one is forcing anyone to participate. Too many are worried about the messenger instead of the message.

Well maybe if people that

Well maybe if people that weren't really needy would NOT take their kids down for the Christmas giveaway then maybe there would be enough for the real needy kids. Last year I watched a woman and her 2 small kids get out of a fairly new Ford Expedition with expensive looking rims on it and both kids had on Nike tennis shoes and dressed in nice looking clothes as was the mother. I'm thinking if she can afford to be driving that kind of vehicle with expensive rims on it then she doesn't need any handouts!!!!

Yeah, they will answer to

Yeah, they will answer to what they did if they took something they didn't need. However, I suggest those that want to give contribute those that don't shut-up. Why would you take shots at something that has been charitable in this community for nearly 20 years.

I think the concept of giving

I think the concept of giving away the turkeys and toys is a wonderful idea but with any giveaway program you will have those who are not really in need take advantage of the program. I don't see any way to prevent it. You will usually find that someone who is truly in need are very humble individuals, are grateful for what help they can get, and they are not greedy. Play close attention and you'll discover who is really in need and who is just there for the handout.

Ispyfu thanks for reiterating

Ispyfu thanks for reiterating an important point, "You do not have to participate." I am happy to know that the turkey giveaway and the Christmas toy giveaway programs remain important events in our community as Mr. James Brown would have wanted them to continue. The dream lives on.

Donate to the food bank or

Donate to the food bank or the Master's Table. I used to donate a turkey and a ham every year. It's a far better use of your money.

Maybe if we get the millions

Maybe if we get the millions that the original trustees of the estate took and never gave back, there will be no need to ask for donations. Also, what happened to the trust that was mentioned in his will???
