Put more resources into south Augusta

  • Follow Letters

I've lived in the south Augusta area most of my life. I have fond memories of growing up here.

Somehow, as time has gone by, the area has gone to another type of environment. The environment I am speaking of is the disregard for the simple grooming of the area, such as regular mowing of the median down Peach Orchard Road, not to mention shrubs or flowers.

The Masters Tournament can't be here all year long. South Augusta looks virtually abandoned by society, yet we pay taxes, pay taxes, pay taxes and pay taxes. South Augusta wants one thing: respect . Put our taxes to work and get this place in order. We deserve it as much as anybody.

Getting back to the median, it is a disgrace when you see that poison has been sprayed or thrown on the grass to kill it -- hence, no mowing needed. No respect!

There is a lot of work to get south Augusta to the condition it ought to be, but with all the taxes that this city pays, a lot of work should be done.

What South Augusta, and most

What South Augusta, and most of Augusta needs, is stricter code and zoning enforcement. It also needs an ordinance to crack down on negligent property owners who create blight and bring down entire neighborhoods. It's not more government spending that is needed.. the problem is the lack of enforcement and accountability.

Patrice.. I agree with you on

Patrice.. I agree with you on the condition of the public rights of way.. some of that is the fault of the state DOT.. but Augusta must do a better job at living up to it's moniker of "The Garden City." We shouldn't just get ourselves into shape just for The Masters. Taxpayers should expect and demand a certain standard of maintainance and upkeep of public spaces in all parts of the city. http://www.butchforaugusta.org

Unpublished

A poor confused tax payer who don't understand her plight. Heres how it works: In every state in this Union, one can vist each individual district and find the same thing, which is, that every geographical area where majority minorities reside, that area will be lacking and in need of serious repair. It is consistent throughout the country and the real reason is a matter of U know what. Yeah, yeah, "we" hear all the talk about living in harmony, but the solution is to properly address the problem. Ol' Pat doesn't seem to know the plan, she resides along with the permanent underclass. She cites the Masters, but this phenomenon happens everywhere because "they" are actively steering federal dollars away from specific areas to other specific areas. And guess where the "other" areas are, cause you'll never know how its done, you'll only see the results. And that my dear, is what U see in S. Aug.

South Augusta is a war zone

South Augusta is a war zone full of cockroaches.

To quote Bill Cosby....... "Pull your pants up, put your hat on straight and learn to speak the english language. Then you might get some respect."

I think you know what I mean.

South Augusta, will always

South Augusta, will always have the problem is has because it has a lot of renter neighborhoods that used to be solid family homes. Apple Valley, Georgetown, etc. Those people have moved on turned their homes into rentals and sect 8 and those people have brought down the area. No easy solution until the people do better the govt can fix the common areas a little but the problems are a lot bigger than that.

There are more problems with

There are more problems with South Augusta and south Richmond County than just the "neighborhoods". Our local government and our Planning and Zoning seem to do everything they can to discourage any improvement or development. They all talked about "future development" in south RC. So they FORCED rezoning of 7000 acres from agricultural to residential. They didn't DO ANYTHING to encourage development but they sure used the opportunity to RAISE THE TAXES on tha newly designated RESIDENTIAL land. And when a few of us put up a cluster of 4000 sq. ft. brick houses out here they immediately bought the adjoining 4 acres and built a WATER PLANT and stuck up a 4000 GALLON CHLORINE TANK with and orange windsock on top so the emergency responders will know which way to run when the tank leaks. Hundreds acres standing empty all around us but they just HAD to build that plant next door to existing homes. Great move RC. Our leaders and our Planning and Zoning seem to make a real effort at killing any progress but our TAX Commissioner seems to think he is in Columbia County where property has some real value and the PLANNING people actually PLAN.

3 things, first decntralize

3 things, first decntralize and hire more police don't just erect EMPTY police substations, build a major substation that is open 24/7/365-"we never close", mandate routine foot and canine patrols starting with the worse neighborhoods/subdivisions. have a zero tolarance for everything from major crimes to quality of life violations. either imprison them or throw them out of the county for a predetermined time. two-make all schools magnet/charter schools, impose high academic standards, suspend all extra-curricular activities of schools that fail to meet ayp, crct or maintain a 65-70% graduation rates and MANDATE parental involvement, parents that refuse, or children that are disrepectful, violent or just don't want to learn...expel them. three-BUILD BIGGER PRISONS!! specializing in long-term inprisonment at least there will be jobs created by warehousing the dregs of society

I dont think restaurants and

I dont think restaurants and fast food is what this place needs, it needs more, like a movie theatre or a gaming area, where kids here are less likely to do the crime and do more good!

It doesn't need a movie

It doesn't need a movie theater or a gaming area, it trashed the ones we had! We need the laws and ordinances to be enforced. No matter where I have lived in 30906 I have been wakened several times a night by the loud cars' bass booming. At least in my most recent move, they don't park next door and keep blasting for over an hour. I've been told to wear ear protection. Why? What good does that do? #1, you can still FEEL the bass, that is actually what wakes me up. #2. Then I can't hear emergencies, like gunshots or alarms going off. (Which they do in this area, sometimes it has been necessary to duck). If the "little" laws were enforced more, other law-breaking would be noticed more often, because the noisemakers are sometimes impaired and you know what that means....

Please visit Wrightsboro Rd.,

Please visit Wrightsboro Rd., Gordon Hwy and Washington Rd. The state is not taking care of any of its property, this is not a south Augusta problem. The city is working with the state to have this handed over to the city if we can get the businesses and citizens to help pay for the maintenance (Public - Private partnership and professional landscape companies). If we can ever work through the BS of GDOT this will be become a reality.

If the government takes taxes

If the government takes taxes equally, they should put it back out equally. Unfortunately you learn things are not always fair in the real world. The government is acting like a business, in that it has a vested interest in maintaining the Washington Road area. I think it has been paved two to three times since Wrightsboro was last paved. Now if the owners of Augusta Mall and Daniel Village demanded the road be paved between them action might..just might happen. Over further in South Augusta there is fewer gambling chips. The owners of the Orchard Square Plaza where Lowes is located, etc might could have more influence than a standard how owner, but still I doubt they could sway things much.

Way back when I went to

Way back when I went to Butler High School I had friends at Westside High School who told me about the supplies the county provided for their art class and weight room, which was much better than what we got, but hey, I knew already that things are not fair. That is just how things are.
