Kennedy's leadership will be missed

We heard him roar for health care reform, for civil rights and for the working folk, but the Great Compromiser has yielded to the roars of others. We will sorely miss Sen. Edward Kennedy's moral leadership!

Where was Teddy? He was there with Sen. Strom Thurmond on crime legislation; with Sen. Dan Quayle on a jobs law; with Attorney General John Ashcroft on a law to protect prisoners from rape; with Sen. Orrin Hatch on SCHIP for insurance for children; and with President Bush on No Child Left Behind -- still underfunded.

Kennedy sponsored 2,500 bills, of which hundreds became law. After trying to get the perfect at the expense of the good when President Nixon tried health care reform, he learned to compromise rather than be ideological -- the get-the-deal-done man rather than the effete idealist.

Had Kennedy not helped lead the wondrous effort for civil rights, our first Euro-African-American president would be elsewhere now! He also knew that minimum-wage rate hikes not only raise pay for those few who receive the rate changes, but on up the line. Those income-earners spend most of their income, providing that stimulus, and so do those on workfare! The poor do work hard, and those on workfare do attend job openings in droves.

Our covenant morality for humanity demands that we take care of the least of these; they might be us someday. The millions who lately have lost their jobs know that quite well. Unemployment insurance is an important matter for families!

Yes, Kennedy fought for families. His legacy will endure as will the work, the cause and the dream! He was a natural aristocrat. Bless his family and these United States! That great patriot blessed them both!

Moral Leadership? LOL - And, he was certainly there for the non-working, no-productive members of society who wish to be enabled by their government but in no way shape or form was he supportive of the working folk who pay taxes. He was a dedicated individual to his country and his beliefs but beyond that he did nothing to help people take personal acountability or responsibility for their own actions or to help people who work hard for their money to be able to retain as much as possible for theirselves, as it should be.

cajunnana2000

May he RIP. He was a good man...

wcr250

He was a flaming liberal , He was not for hard working ,honest americans. He was a drunk, a phony, and ungodly. Good riddance I only wish nancy,Reid and Obama were with him.

Fundamental_Arminian

Ted Kennedy is to be commended for helping the civil rights movement and for supporting our federal anti-discrimination laws. But his anti-life stance and his promotion of federally subsidized abortions is a terrible legacy. How sad that he didn't repent of those things before his death! It will be interesting to see what kind of funeral he gets from the Church of Rome.

This poor soul must be related to Greenbaum and wear the same Democratic blinders he does. One cannot speak seriously of moralality and the Kennedy's in the same breath. Where was ole Teddy's morality the night he let Mary Jo drown?? As they say in the service, all the "atta boys" in the world won't do you a bit of good when you have that big "UH-OH!!!" You go cry into your morning teacup, Morgan, if it makes you feel better about this load of diseased lard dying, but the rest of us know scum when we see it.

They have pills that you all can take, that will help with your constant whining.

opiner

Wow. After you drink the kool aid and fall unconscious, this is the letter you would write. You wouldn't bother to mention that all of his actions were anti-American and pro-Teddy. He won't be missed by any intelligent Americans.

Yea, the haters do hate and bleat and weep! I fell Schadenfreude for their pain.
Again and ever again, they prefer the lie that there are the productive and the parasites. And to support that lie, they find other lies for that support!Their cesspool of reaction provokes our righteous attack.
We who counsel reason and empathy must ever lead the attack against that blasphemy to reason and humanity! We dearly appreciate honest, fair criticism.
Dr. Lowell Greenbaum is a moral leader. The ugly attacks on him come from ugly minds. He can laugh the attacks off!
The Lord Griggs now also laughs at the uninformed attacks on him! He now has a tough skin; experience doth that to people .!He researches : reason doth that to people. Others prefer the cesspools of the left or the right! He objurgates all that. He could fathom William Francis Buckley ,jr's. vocabulary!
Hot Foot, Concernednative and other concerned with the truth, thank you ! I've written off and on to this newspaper since I was fifteen years old. The first letters were of the Patrick J.Buchanan type of non-thinking, then others were of the libertarian non-thinking type and around twenty-two , I found reason.

"Our covenant morality for humanity"? What is this, and where did it come from? Did Kennedy sign up for this? Did Mary Jo sign up with Teddy before she got into the car with him?

lord griggs1947

The covenant morality is that each of us is bound up with all humanity such that we owe each to the other. Again, people of no fault of their own loose jobs and health insurance: society has to help them as they helped society with their taxes. Some are ever dependent- the very least of these. Those who cannot empathize with the downtrodden embody meanness and- ignorance. I exhume [ throw light on ] them. With that noble Dr. Albert Ellis - " The Myth of Self-Esteem"- I note that they do good otherwise: their are few evil people and none without faults. Sen. Kennedy had his drinking problem which he paid for dearly with the lost of Mary Jo Kopechne. He was cited for leaving the scene of an accident. Nowadays, we have penalties against drunkenness that leads to harm. He turned his life around with devotion to helping the workers- expiation perhaps. He outshines his critics who bleat and weep!

overburdened_taxpayer

Leadership? Did he show leadership and personal responsibility when he killed Mary Jo? And most politicians are not in the job to serve their country. They are in it for self advancement and monetary incentives and power, including the Kennedys.

55 F-100

The Kennedy $$$ prevented his prosecution on earth, but will do him no good when he stands before the ultimate Judge.

Unhappy with Obama

Started to write something good about Kennedy, but couldn't think of anything good to say.

"The covenant morality is that each of us is bound up with all humanity such that we owe each to the other." Again, where does this come from? I've never heard or read about it. Did someone codify this "covenant"? Who makes the rules about this covenant? I'd just like to know the source of it. Lofty-sounding words are oftentimes nice, but they can be platitudes without substance unless there's a recognized source for these ideas somewhere.

GnipGnop1

If you can't say anythijng good about someone then don't say anything......I will remain silent.

convertedsoutherner

If you read many of the stories about kennedy and his immoral actions, you certainly can't think anything good about this man. His actions, along with some others that are in congress now, were reprehensible. Ask some of the women how they were treated by him and you won't get possitive comments. The truth will start pouring out now. Again, watch libs ignore the truth and defend this man. If he had been a republican, they would be ready to burn him at the stake.

howcanweknow

That is often true, CS. I've read pretty condemning words here about how horrible Strom Thurmond was, all stemming from back in the 60's when he fought desegregation. But, I've never yet heard anyone complain about the fact that Robert Byrd, the venerable democratic senator from W.Va., is a former Grand Dragon of the KKK. Selective memory is a wonderful thing, is it not?

FaceTheMusic

The difference is that Robert Byrd said he was wrong and changed his opinion; Strom Thurmond never did. He was a bigot and a homophobe right up until the day he died.

(FOX NEWS) I'm so glad to see so many Republicans are now willing to support the president's Health plan as a tribute to Senator Kennedy. Who said that Republicans only had cold water in their veins? HELLO! HELLO!

southernguy08

The letter does not mention one word about Ted Kennedy's secretary, Mary Jo Kopechne, who he left in a car in 10 feet of water to slowly drown after he drove off a bridge in a drunken stupor. It doesn't mention her family. When did he fight for her life? It doesn't mention at all how Joe Kennedy Sr. paid off the right people to get his little boy out of trouble and keep him from spending one single night in jail, something impossible for the rest of us in the same cirmcumstance. The main people who will miss Ted Kennedy are the bar owners in Washington and Boston.

bettyboop

griggs your C & P skills are pretty good ...but perhaps you could try to speak in your own words?

LaTwon

there is no problem that a rich liberal isnt willing to solve with other peoples money. of course theirs is locked up in a tax exempt foundation to provide for their children so they can run for congress and move to washington and become the town drunk.

Onthebeach

Wonder what ole Teddy is doing at this exact moment.....Probably trying to use the "Kennedy" name to get what he wants!

mad_max

Just another RICH, ELITE Democrat who always knew a better way to spend MORE OF YOUR MONEY. He never met a give away program nor a new tax that he did not like. You can be that way when you have MILLIONS of dollars in BOOTLEGGING money tucked away in tax free bonds. When you are that rich you don't even have to worry about being detained when you kill someone while drunk.

Roeschen

Who exactly will miss teddy? Other than his family, bar owners, a few liquor manufacturers, and possibly the Catholic Irish. Also, who cares about Strom Thurmond. He's also dead and gone. Worry about the idiots in congress now.

American 4 Justice

Yes, finally, some justice for Mary Jo K. will be meted out by God Almighty. It's a shame that the almighty dollar worked in his favor to keep any justice for her from being served while he was on earth. The so-called "working poor" that looked to this man like he was a "small-g" god are stupid to not realize that he was only out for himself, and what his name could buy him. Finally, the State of Massachusetts has a chance for real "change." That is if the citizens are given a chance to vote for it. Talk about hypocrite--Teddy got the state legislature 5 years ago to change the laws, while Republican Governor, Mitt Romney was in power, so that if he died then, Romney would not be able to appoint a Republican successor, but now, that a Democrat is in the Governor's seat, just last week, on his deathbed, Teddy asks for yet another change in the state law so that the Governor can appoint someone (democratic of course.) Why is it that that man was allowed for 50+ years to practically write laws himself? Good Riddance I say! See if God Almighty lets you run things up there! You're in for a rude awakening, Teddy!

convertedsoutherner

Kennedy wanted the law before he didn't want the law.

JesusIsComing

Mary Jo Kopechne was unavailable for comment.

VickFan

Dems whined about Bush for 8 years... get over it if we speak the truth about a Catholic man that aborted his date Mary Jo and supported abortion.

lord griggs1947

Perhaps, to atone for his dereliction in the lost of Mary Jo, he tried to atone with his service to us all. Maybe his memoirs will attest that as discussed on Morning Joe this morning.
Yes, Gov. Patrick Duval would do good to appoint someone who would vote as Teddy did!
Teddy knew that the super rich don't stimulate the economy with their tax savings but only invest to earn more. The real stimulus comes from the rest of us - demand-side economics as was the case with his brother's tax cut! Pres. Reagan and Pres. Bush's tax cuts primarily for the super rich did not spur the economy; for the former, it was his big military build-up -big spending and- government got ever bigger, and for the latter, it was such a paltry recovery again a big debt. Pres. Obama's health care plan can help reduce that debt-yes, indeed!
damemarystuaart, these are my words. Thank you.
Just what steps do we need to make for health care reform?
