As best as I can understand after reading the entire 1,018-page bill, the U.S. government is going into the health-care business.
What in our Constitution gives the federal government the authority to compete against private business? Where is the provision for universal health care funded by the people and managed by the government? Yes, we need reform, but not this way.
Tort reform is a start. Frivolous lawsuits cost businesses untold billions and clog the court system unnecessarily. Fraud is rampant on both the care receivers' and caregivers' side. And the health of this country as a whole is beyond ridiculous. Alcoholism, drug dependency, and lethargy are completely preventable, as is most of the obesity problem. It seems we have a responsibility and accountability problem.
In this bill, an appointed commissioner will have great latitude to affect the success of the act, regardless of what it takes, and regardless of what it costs. To think that government will be more efficient than private business is laughable. They tell us to forget the past; it's now a new day. But the only thing worse than nostalgia is amnesia.
"To promote for the general welfare" is not to be interpreted as "provide" for the general welfare. Nearly every agency in the federal government, bar none, is rife with waste, fraud and nepotism. The president himself touted the success of Federal Express and United Parcel Service as opposed to the U.S. Post Office. Yes, Mr. President, I agree with you on this one. The private sector always does a better job.
Government's job is to create an atmosphere in which business can thrive and ideas can flourish. The ideas of our elected leave much to be desired.

Obama has no intention of COMPETING with private business. He said himself that he intends to gradually have government completely take over the Health Insurance industry. There are those who will say the doesn't intend to do this, including Obama himself, but it directly contradicts what he, himself SAID with his own mouth. Was he lying then or is he lying now?
according to our bill of rights our freedoms come from a supreme being not from govt. therefore the fundamental rights cannot be taken from the govt. that includes my right to choose which health care i want, it is not the right of some congessman to decide my fundamental choices in life. this is not freedom this is simply against the constitution and therefore un-american. every govt intrusion in our lives ought and must be challenged.
The article is full of holes and the biggest one is ol' Larry's grasp of the US Constitution. Example: No where in the writings does it authorizes the buyng & selling of human beings or give particular citizens authority to kill, lynch, or otherwise harm for personal gains, however, those atrocities are well documented. Another failure of the writer is the belief that government should create an "atmosphere" for businesses to prosper, which is only regurgitating something he has heard. Unstable governments like Iraq, N. Korea, or Samolia are example of failures of government agencies to provide "atomspheres" for successful business because of war and internal conflict. America does not have that problem, in fact she is the international model that most countries emulate except for health care. Our's is actually the worst and much like the selling of humans is unthinkable, so is the thought of fellow citizens having their entire life savings and business ruined because of a catastrophic illness. Again, unthinkable.

justus, I read these letters and comments almost daily and very seldom do I post, but your response today is causing me concern. This article is about health care. Why is it that you cannot discuss this or any issue without interjecting race? All these type comments ever does is sidetrack the discussion point. You either do not get what the writer is articulating or you know what he writes is true and you want to "muddy" the water so everyone gets off the subject. Please try to stay on point and stop with the race baiting. Become part of the solution.

Justus4, yea, we liberals and other recognize that this great Union has ans will do wrong,but we can correct the wrongs at times or at least, acknowledge them as Pres. Barack Husein Obama is doing expiate for them. Whilst Sen Bernard Sanders's one-payer, state administerd plan would save millions of dollars in overhead and otherwise, Sanders and the Great Compromiser recognized that Congress should not sacrifice the Senate-Obama plan [ It will become the Kennedy plan, I understand.] for this one that would fail to pass Congress as the private insurers have their way. Had the private insurers the Medicare Plus plan as competition, they would compete much better. In time if they couldn't compete then yea, the Plus plan would, perforce, be the one that individuals would support !
And again, the Constitution guarantees unenumerated rights, and does guarantee the general welfare as the Supreme Court ever so declares! Nay, it is they who support exiguous change that would not do anything to keep insurance costs from doubling in the nest decade! Yea, government can and- does spend money better than we can in some ways! Business, charity and government can have drawbacks to fix.

It would have been much better if the government would have approached health care from the insurance side of the equation. Expanding Medicare/Medicaid with a mandatory acceptance clause would have been a much better approach. By mandating a percentage of Medicare/Medicaid patients be served by health care providers, similar to the emergency care provision of hospitals, the health care standards would be maintained at minimal cost expenditure for those in the health care business. This would level the playing field and require those who would qualify for Medicare/Medicaid to sign up for the service with appropriate ID.
Prezbo's health care reform will be as successful as his direction to mail $250 stimulus checks to inmates. There's change you can believe in. OMG

Wouldn't it be nice if we ALL had the healthcare that kennedy had? But American citizens won't be getting that healthcare plan. Why not? Why is all this extra cr@p included in the horrible plan they are pushing at us? Congressional members, the VP and the President do not pay for their healthcare, but the taxpayers do. Government employees pay their fair share of insurance premiums just like anyone in the private sector. Am I outraged? Of course I am, but who's listening? Certainly not the big O and his cronies.

Insurance companies rob us everyday with health insurance. What do you guys think is happening when they say minimum $1500 annual deductible, no maternity covergage until 36 months, $25 co-pays, & no coverage for back related claims because you went to te doctor three years earlier for a back ache that has never effected you again? You call it underwriting and I call it rationing. It is strange how comfortable we get depending on who's screwing us. If State Farm, United Healthcare, or BCBS screw us it feels better than a national healthcare option that presents the same limitations. Once Conservatives stop playing games and deal with this more honestly, nothing will ever change. Their grandmother will not die over this, illegal aliens won't be offered coverage, and those unfair death panels will no longer be needed. How do you have a debate about healthcare with Conservatives crying about irrational foolish? I truly hope a national healthcare option is approved. I know of a case where a insect bite led to a $20K surgery because a child's parents had BCBS. But when the President tries to rein them in, Conservatives start whining he is limiting their coverages. Who's screwing who?

I watched a town hall on C-Span Tuesday night can't remember the reps name but he represents northern VA and he was in Reston, VA. He said his healthcare if BCBS he pays about $500/month (he takes the best plan option) and he is offered the same plans as all other federal employees are offered. The govt pays about the same % as all of your employers do. So their plan isn't much difference from the rest of ours.

You can atone for something but you cannot "doing atone" Second, enumerate means to number one by one...What point are you trying to make with the statement, " the Constitution guarantees unenumerated rights" So the way it reads the Constitution guarantees "not- numbered" rights??? Then why are the articles in the Constitution numbered? You did however use one "BIG" word right, and that was exiguous...which means "scanty" but I pointed that out to you a couple of weeks back.

converted, it was a family plan and he said is was the highest rated option (lowest out of pocket expenses, etc), the $500 was his cost.
