Lunch Money: TBonz Steakhouse

The specialty of the house is red meat at TBonz Steakhouse, 2856 Washington Road, but they do a great job with the white meats, too.

At a recent lunchtime visit, Lunch Buddy Donna and I tried to be good to our hearts by going with baked potatoes instead of fries, a grilled chicken sandwich (for me) and a blackened tilapia sandwich (for Donna) instead of burgers.

Good choices. The fish and the chicken were succulent and tasty, and the potatoes were so good they needed just a smattering of butter.

The staffers were especially attentive and friendly, passing by every few minutes to keep the iced tea glasses filled and tend to our needs, all without being intrusive.

TBonz is fast (we were out within an hour), but it's also a great place to linger and talk. The booths are comfortable and offer plenty of room, and you're sitting far enough away from other diners that you don't feel you're part of their conversation.

The décor has a bit of something for everyone. There's the expected steak house kitsch such as prints of cows in classical painting poses and a big steer head overlooking the dining room, but there also are sports memorabilia and a lot of golf-related stuff that lets you know you're just downhill from Augusta National.

Donna had a tossed salad with her order, which placed the tab a bit over the Lunch Money standard of $10 each, but even so, we were out of TBonz for $26, including 20 percent tip.
