'McDuffie Mirror' names new publisher

Todd Rainwater has been named publisher of The McDuffie Mirror.

Don Bailey, president of The Augusta Chronicle, announced Mr. Rainwater's acceptance of the job Thursday. Mr. Rainwater succeeds Jason Smith, who left July 31 to accept a position with Joseph M. Still Burn Center.

Mr. Rainwater, a former publisher of The McDuffie Progress, until recently served as publisher and advertising manager of the Easley Progress, Powdersville Post and Pickens Sentinel newspapers in Easley, S.C. He will begin at the Mirror on Monday.

County OKs bonds for Goodwill store, center

The Development Authority of Richmond County on Thursday approved a resolution to issue up to $8 million in industrial revenue bonds for Goodwill Industries of the CSRA and Middle Georgia as part of its financing of a retail store and training center in the Village West Shopping Center.

Goodwill is awaiting word on a $1.7 million grant from the Economic Development Agency .

Prestige Appliance to open 2nd Aiken store

An Aiken appliance business announced Thursday that it will be expanding with a second, larger location on Whiskey Road in Aiken in September.

The Prestige Appliance Outlet will be in the Aiken Exchange Shopping Center across from Hobby Lobby. It is the latest venture of locally owned and operated Prestige Appliance.

Swiss banker, lawyer indicted in tax probe

MIAMI -- A Swiss banker and a lawyer are the latest to face U.S. criminal charges in a wide-ranging international tax evasion investigation.

Banker Hansruedi Schumacher and attorney Matthias Rickenbach were charged Thursday with conspiring to defraud the U.S.

It wasn't immediately clear if the two Switzerland-based men had been arrested or had hired lawyers.

Mr. Schumacher is a senior executive at Swiss bank NZB. Prosecutors claim he encouraged U.S. customers at Swiss banking giant UBS AG to transfer assets to NZB to avoid scrutiny.

ATT is accused of age discrimination in suit

NEW YORK -- The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission said Thursday that it filed an age-discrimination lawsuit against AT&T Inc., the country's largest telecommunications provider.

The EEOC says AT&T discriminated against older employees by denying them the chance to be rehired solely because they retired under early retirement plans.

AT&T declined to comment specifically on the lawsuit.

In other news

Average rates on 30-year mortgages slid to the lowest levels since May this week, at 5.12 percent, down from 5.29 percent last week, according to Freddie Mac.
