Born in Germany in 1887, Holzhauer studied art at the Staatliche Werkkunst Schule. In 1906, he arrived in New York and studied at the Art Students League with Robert Henri, whose followers were known as the Ashcan School for their unromanticized depictions of everyday urban life.

Among Holzhauer's fellow students were Edward Hopper, George Bellows and Rockwell Kent.

After serving in the Army in World War I, Holzhauer moved to Chicago and taught at the Art Institute.

In the early 1940s, he headed south, taking a position at the Asheville School, and later becoming professor of art at Wesleyan College in Macon.

Like others who studied with Henri, Holzhauer employed heavy outlines and bold swashes of color in his work. According to Morris Museum director Kevin Grogan, "he produced wonderful images in a highly personal style that captured the life of his adopted home vividly and energetically ... and his mature work serves as a link between the South and the emerging Modernist movement in America."
