Refugee parents mourn for child

CLARKSTON, GA. --- A refugee couple from Bhutan who recently arrived in DeKalb County prepared to mourn their 6-year-old daughter Thursday, hours after the man charged in her death turned himself in to face a charge of vehicular homicide.

Gregory Armwood was released from the DeKalb County Jail on Thursday afternoon on $1,000 bond. He is also charged with failure to exercise due care. The charges against him are misdemeanors.

Suk Maya Monger died Tuesday after she was struck by an SUV that authorities say passed a MARTA bus on the wrong side of the road on East Ponce de Leon Avenue in DeKalb County. She and her mother, Rupa Monger, had just gotten off the bus.

Teenager struck by lightning at practice

BELLVILLE, GA. --- Evans County authorities say a 14-year-old boy was seriously injured after he was struck by lightning during football practice at a private school.

Claxton Fire Chief Harold Rogers said Thursday witnesses reported a loud boom and a cloud of dust when lightning struck the field at Pinewood Christian Academy on Wednesday.

Sheriff Randall Tippins said the injured student, William Dalton Raulerson, was taken to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah and was listed in critical condition Wednesday night. A hospital spokesman did not immediately return a call Thursday seeking an update on his condition.

New enrollment up by 75 students at UGA

ATHENS, GA. --- The University of Georgia is expecting more than 6,300 new undergraduate students this fall.

That number includes more than 4,700 freshmen, who moved on to campus this week. New student enrollment is up about 75 students compared to last fall.

The entering freshman class has a grade point average of 3.83. Classes start Monday.
