Daly withdraws after 78

CHASKA, Minn. --- John Daly withdrew from the PGA Championship after finishing with consecutive double bogeys for 6-over-par 78. He cited a back injury.

Daly shot 88 in his previous round at the Buick Open, and he was contemplating a long break from golf. His swing coach suggested his diet was out of whack after the 1991 PGA champion lost 80 pounds in four months.

Daly left the scoring trailer for the clubhouse without speaking to reporters. He later posted on Twitter, "flash camera back injury from 3 yrs ago still haunting me -- pain is just unbearable making it tough to play -- stretch all day thru the round."

That was a reference to a rib injury he sustained in the Honda Classic two years ago when he tried to stop his swing upon hearing the shutter of a fan's camera.

THE OTHER GUY: Rich Beem loves being introduced as a PGA champion, although that sounded pretty paltry in the company he kept Thursday -- Padraig Harrington with his three majors, Tiger Woods with his 14.

What was it like playing with such rock stars?

"Just a couple of guys having a nice, quiet three-ball out there, with 30,000 people screaming their heads off," said Beem, who had 71 to Woods' 67 and Harrington's 68. "It was a blast."

SLIDING BACK: Adam Scott thought he had turned the corner with his tie for fourth in the Scottish Open.

He missed the cut in the British Open, finished at the bottom of the pack at Firestone, then opened the PGA Championship with 42 on the front nine. It didn't get much better from there. Scott birdied the last hole for 40 on the side and 82 for the round.

STILL THE SAME: The PGA Championship chose not to increase the prize money for the first time since 1994.

The purse will be $7.5 million, with $1.35 million going to the winner.
