Letter to the Editor
On July 12, I was included in a conference call from U.S. Rep. Paul Broun about the health care plans before Congress.
Tellingly, for a call that was supposed to be seeking input from the people he represents about our health care system, the only choices available concerned why we did not support the bills. There was no option for those of us who support health care reform to indicate why it is important.
It happened that a couple of days before the phone call, I had seen a copy of the memo of talking points sent out by the Republican leadership to use in killing the bill. The options given on the phone call were word-for-word the same as that memo.
Neither Rep. Broun nor the Republican leadership has any interest in improving the bill or doing anything to save the medical care system in this country from collapse. Their only purpose is to try to destroy the Obama presidency, and they see killing his centerpiece bill as the best way to do that.
All they are interested in is their regaining power. If they have to destroy the 47 million people who have no health care, the tens of millions more who have seen their health insurance premiums double and redouble, and the health care system itself, so be it.
I was unable to attend Rep. Broun's meeting Aug. 10, but the reports are that it was more of the same -- supply misinformation bordering on outright lies and play on people's fear to get their way. It worked to get Bush II elected twice but started to wear thin in the 2006 midterms and was pretty well killed last year. Don't let the Republicans revive the culture of fear. Say yes to hope and the future.
