Photograph captured spirit of debate

  • Follow Letters

The photo by Jackie Ricciardi at the top right of the Aug. 11 news- paper deserves a prize in photojournalism!

It puts in sharp focus the current zeitgeist regarding health care: the men with traditional hands over heart in respect of the Pledge of Allegiance, and the woman with her fist in air.

One photo captures it all!

I know I had to look it up....Zeitgeist is a German language expression translated as: Zeit, time; Geist, spirit, meaning "the spirit of the age and its [word zeitgeist describes the intellectual, cultural, ethical and political climate, ambience and morals of an era (similar to the English word "mainstream") or also a trend. In German, the word has more layers of meaning than the English translation; included in common understanding of the term is the allegation that Zeitgeist may only be observed for past events.

Retired Army on Thu Aug 13, 2009 5:27 AM You are correct, they see our nation going to h*ll on the fast track under one of the most insulting, incompetent presidents we have ever had and people are angry and scared! Obumblers's meeting was a joke, child planted in the audiance, no opposing point of view or hard questions, touts free enterprise systems over government systems while trying to sell a government system. Obumbler then accuses those who oppose him of organzing disruptions, and it being fake. Even Palin (the idiot according to the left) knows you don't pick a fight with those that buy ink by the barrel, so Obumbler is picking a fight with Fox News, the number one rated network, what a toon!

I agree Retired Army. The elderly SHOULD be scared if they read the house proposed health care "reform". I also noticed that while scared, none of the people were cowering. Must be Repubs.

The photo is clearly focused and better lit than most interior photos, but apart from the big-mouth woman in the foreground, the picture's composition is poor. It is no prizewinner. As a propaganda photo, however, it has its uses. These people do look like a waiting line for the death panel.

opiner

The are, dashiel. Haven't you read the proposed "reform"? babies and elderly first.

Yep, you got it a bunch of angry old white people already on the govt plan of Medicare. Jeez

For the info of all posters. The people in the photo are all on socialized medicine that is regulated by the U.S.Government. Those retired army posters are covered by another Government Regulated health plan called TRI-CARE which also handles the families of active duty soldiers. The reason the elderly should be concerned is for Medical activities that are driven by dollars and not by need. Case in point. Recently a very good friend of mine passed away at age of 73 from Cancer of the lungs. In her last 3 weeks on earth she had brain surgery, and was taking radiation theraphy up until three days before she passed. Needless to say she was in teriffic pain. The bottom line is the doctors all knew she was dying and nothing would help, but the facilities never lost sight of a potential BUCK. And that was their focus, not her health, not her pain, rather the bottom line of the Corporation. BTW the lady was on Medicare and the taxpayers paid dearly for her last three weeks of excrusiating pain.

The old folks should not be scared...THEY SHOULD BE TERRIFIED. First words out of the Democrats and Obama's mouth? Cut Medicare spending. This is not really a government program. This is a program that the OLD FOLKS paid into all of their lives and a program that WOULD HAVE BEEN SELF FUNDING if the Democrats had not AUTHORIZED the STEALING of the money paid into the system. Damned right, the old foks BETTER BE SCARED. And anyone else who actually works and pays taxes and has medical insurance should be scared. YOUR MONEY IS FIXING TO GO AWAY IN HIGHER TAXES AND YOUR MEDICAL CARE IS FIXING TO GET WORSE UNDER GOVERNMENT HEALTHCARE OR COST YOU A LOT MORE UNDER PRIVATE INSURANCE UNTIL THEY ALL GO OUT OF BUSINESS. You younger folks who keep criticizing the "scared" old foks....well it's time you get a job and pay your own way in this world and quit sucking your parents and grand parents dry. The old folks have already paid their way and most of your way up until now. It's time for you to give work a try.

Stupes like ConCitiz forget that it's those angry, now-old white people who provided him with probably most of the benefits he has felt entitled to all his life, like education, health care, a consumer economy-- by their hard work and decency. So shut up. You'll probably be simply worthless and old when you hit their age.

People old & young should be troubled by what is happening to the USA.Our country is for all purposes bankrupt. Our national debt is about 12 trillion dollars & the deficit is 1.2 trillion. Our money is only backed by the word of the USA that it will pay its debts.Social Security will be totally bankrupt by 2015.What do you young people think will happen to your taxes in the coming years?Read about inflation in Germany after WWI.People started fires with the money to stay warm.If you want all these programs someone has to pay. Will the elderly be encouraged to die because they are a burden? From the looks of some of these posts I think that's a good possibility.

They should have had "I want my country back" above the ladies head do the fist pumping.

I've studied German history in an effort to learn why they their history went the way it went. The abominable German language didn't help their communication. It consisted of run on sentences filled with words, words, flowery words with more rambling descriptive words and intellectual descriptions of blustery words that pointlessly went on and on like this sentence but even more so, so that the sentence was filled with 100 words that you couldn't make heads or tails about what in the heck they were trying to say, but in which the sentence tried to convey everything in the authors mind in one confusing, redundant mythical sentence-paragraph where many of the words were 20 characters long.
