Who says play dates are just for kids?

PlayDate has been reconnecting adults with childhood fun across the nation, and now organizers of PlayDate Augusta hope to do the same here.

"PlayDate is an opportunity for adults to get back to the child in their heart," said Ryan Hill, co-founder of Timeless Entertainment Concepts, the entertainment company that manages PlayDate and its affiliates.

"It's a cool night for adults to come out, socialize, have food and drinks and play some games they haven't played in years."

The event features a variety of games including Monopoly, Connect Four, Uno, spades, chess, Jenga, Twister, Wii bowling and Pac-Man.

What makes PlayDate more than a typical game night is its signature games such as musical chairs, Simon says and red light, green light, Mr. Hill said.

"We take those games people played as a child, retool them for adults and take them to another level," he said. "These signature games are designed to be interactive. We have the crowd participate, and that's something you don't get with other nightlife options."

PlayDate has expanded to more than 20 cities since it launched in Atlanta in 2005. PlayDate Augusta launched in June.

"Not everyone wants to go to a club, but they still want to go out and have fun," said Mea Matthews, co-founder of MAC Entertainment. "We didn't see where Augusta had any organized game nights or anything close to it, so we felt this was something that could work here. It's a great alternative."

When people come to PlayDate, the goal is for them to leave their adult lives at the door, said Rafiq Mateen, who has hosted PlayDate in different cities.

"I want people to go back to the time when you had no bills, no job, no children and no worries," he said. "All you would do all day is have fun. My job is to create a fun atmosphere, and when people see me having fun, they'll start to loosen up and have fun, too."

That sounds like a great time. They need to orgainize one for Columbia County so I won't have so far to drive. Wonder if a fat, old, white lady that wears poly clothes will be welcome, lol.

I went the last time they were downtown. I had a blast! I am waiting for the next date so I can go again. It's not all the drunks or obnoxious people, it's just a nice gathering and having fun times again for the adults.
