Who benefits from unchanged care?

On this issue of health care, we need to ask ourselves who benefits the most if nothing changes.

Certainly not us. Contrary to what we are told, managed care that we now have provides insurance programs with the power to intercede in any health decision between us the hospital and doctor, by refusing to cover a procedure or service whether it is life-threatening or not.

The insurance companies and those on their payrolls, our politicians, stand to lose millions -- no, billions -- of dollars if they lose their third-party position standing between us and our medical care.

In spite of what is said, we are the government. We seem to have lost that concept.

The lies put out about healthcare reform by the insurance companies and those on their payroll only lets me know reform of some sort is going to benefit the industry (competition) and the people...The one thing reform won't do is add to the coffers of the insurance juggernauts who already decide who lives and dies...They are the death panels that Palin really should have been talking about, instead of misleading those who listen to her...

carcraft

70% of Americans are happy with their health care insurance so Obumbler will F it up so the 30% dead beats, illegal aliens, poverty pinps and irresponsible can be taken care of on the 70%'s dime? Who profits from reform,? Thats easy, the big government managers that then have say over your health care and get to manage 1/6th of the US economy!

dashiel

Where are the statistics for those who were pleased with their insurance until they needed it?

teharper428

The health care reform bill, still in committee, is not proposing that people lose their private insurance if they are satisfied with it. In addition, it has measures to ensure illegal aliens are not covered. And the poor are already covered under Mediaid.

southernguy08

I'm happy with mine, DASHIEL. What Mr. Ferguson carefully ignores is that if taxpayer funded healthcare becomes reality, we'll only replace insurance pencil pushers saying what kind of treatment you can get with government pencil pushers, and the taxpayers are stuck with the bill, including millions of illegals. No thanks! That's "change" I don't believe in.

southernguy08

TEHARPER, remember a little program called Social Security? It too was supposed to be voluntary only in 1937. Does anybody ask you if that can take that "FICA" out of your paycheck now? Get real.

opiner

That's rich, Micheal Ferguson. The politicians have screwed up health care so we should have them fix it....... You're a Dem, aren't you?

dashiel

Good luck with that, southern, but you're not dead yet either.

dashiel on Wed Aug 12, 2009 6:36 AM Both my wife and I have used our health insurance and it has worked well. No, we won't be able to keep our private insurance, if I get into the gubment program I can't go back to private. The plan is to have single pay in about 15 to 20 years according to the You Tube video of Obumbler. Am I going to believe Obumbler or an annymous poster on the internet? GET REAL! Oh! your social security number is suposed to be secret, not for identification according to federal law. That's worked pretty well hasn't it?

Grasshopper

I will go along with the health care program as long as those in congress, Supreme court, and the executive branch are required to use the same health care plan.

Rhetor

Under the present policy, as soon as the family breadwinner gets really sick, the insurance goes away--unless you are one of the lucky few families who can afford COBRA, and that only lasts for 18 months. If you have a private insurance policy, the insurance companies use every trick in the book to deny your claims. The 70% who are happy with their insurance are the people who haven't needed it. The anti-Obama plan posters on this page are one serious illness from bankruptcy. Only the very rich or very foolish support the system that we have now.

dashiel

carcraft, doesn't HIPPA now assigns numbers to patients in lieu of names? Like no one in a lab would ever confuse one NUMBER with another, or, God forbid, should your ambulance wreck enroute...

noteworthy

You name callers make me sick to my stomach. You sit on your cans and call this representative of this "Great Country"names and you teach your children to do the same, then you wonder why this country has so many problems, take a look in the mirror. SHAME ON YOU! I work in the health care and I have health care insurance, beleive me you want some kind of change. How many of you ask your nurses "how many patients are you caring for today"?

Social Security is going broke, Medicare is going broke, VA Hospital care is a disgrace, the IRS and the tax code is out of control, wasted taxpayer money is documented in almost every department of government, and now we are being asked to hand over our health care to the governement. Look at their performance in other areas that they control and then determine if we should let them run something as large as health care, and get it right. I think not. I too, am happy with my health care. Those that say you can keep your current health care are partially correct. However, insurance companies can not take on new customers, thus they have to go on the public plan. Obama himself has said that he is in favor of a single payer system, and that it might take 15-20 years to transition to that type of system. Obama says it clearly, and the left still does not want to believe it.

southernguy08

DASHIEL, I'll make it simple for you. Name me one government run program that runs efficiently and doesn't cost the taxpayers through the nose. Now, tell me how much faith you have in a program run by a government trillions in debt that can't even secure it's borders. Go ahead...I'll wait.

UncleBill

The only people who benefit from the current system, or actually lack of a system, is the insurance companies. If you don't believe that health care is rationed now, then you are not paying attention to what happens when you go to your doctor visit; first thing is check the insurance. Need a test, check the insurance. Need a medication, check the insurance. Got no insurance, well too bad.

SoonerorLater

Under UncleBill's theory, milk is rationed, want milk but have no money, to bad. Gas is rationed, need gas but have no money, no gas. Food is rationed, need food but have no money, sorry.

concernednative

I have to agree the people who are happy with their coverage probably haven't had anything other than basic treatments. There should be a follow up question have you are anyone on your plan ever had any major claims. I bet you would get a totally different response.

mieshel

so true uncle bill!! yesterday I had an appointment with a doctor and I was "on time" for the appt. was called into the room 15 minutes later only to sit in there alone waiting for the doctor for an hour! I went to the front desk to inquire about it..while leaving, the doctor comes out apologizing. Bottom line I didnt get treated. He should pay me for wasting my time...But on the other hand, if I had missed the appt, he would have sent me a &*(*( bill!! A shame when a doctor makes an appt to see you and he cant even keep it..

concnernednative......Just this year alone I have had shoulder surgery followed by 4 months of physical therapy (almost $30,000 for all of that), I paid $24 out of pocket for all that. I have a problem now that I am going in for a procedure tomorrow, fairly major and beyond a routine treatment. Have also had sleep tests and lots of medication, all paid for by insurance. My wife is also have a procedure done next month beyond basic treatment. We both have professional jobs and have two types of insurance to cover us. We certainly pay for it each month, but have found it useful and easy to use.

I don't support the goverment run heatlth care. I have private insurance and am satisfied with it. I have had to use it for multiple births of my children and two years ago I had an MI that required angioplasty twice both times required multiple day hospital stays and I can tell you my insurance performed exactly as I expected it to. My wife an I both work hard and enjoy the benefits of private health care and would like to continue that enjoyment but I don't feel that I should be subsidizing those who are looking for a free handout. I believe everyone no matter their condition should work for what they get. Those folks out there looking for free health care, get them out picking up trash on the side of the road or sorting recycling goods instead of sending them to the dump. I can think of a thousand jobs for those looking for a free handout that would contribute back to society. Unfortunately, the libs seem to think we should just give it all away for free to those who won't do for themselves.

concernednative

RJH, if you are self-employed wait until it is time to renew. Or if you are under group coverage you or your wife whoever is carrying the coverage better not change jobs or get laidoff because I can promise you will not get reasonable coverage. It will be cost prohibitive and exclude your pre-existing conditions.

SoonerorLater

Government run health care is NOT the answer. Just look at the government's record on SS, Medicare, Tax collection, Welfare, etc. Lots of wasted money, cronyism, fraud, and red tape. Currently you cannot buy insurance over state lines, yet I can buy car insurance or home insurance from any insurance company in the country yet we are restrained by state boundaries for health insurance. Eliminate that restraint, competition will be more intense, and prices "should" decrease and service "should" increase as is the way a capitalistic market is supposed to operate.

LolaJean

No one that I have listened to or seen on TV is saying "do nothing" about our current health care system Mr. Ferguson. Good Try! Do you realize the amount of fraud that goes on every day in the medical industry? For starters, how about putting a cap on the medical mal practice suits? That would keep the doctor's insurance down, which would help bring the consumer's costs down. Of course Brilliant Barry told the docs to their face he wasnt going to do anything to protect them. This president isnt making any friends in the medical field. Gee, I wonder why people are choosing other professions! Just another example of punishing those who work hard! Good job at watering down the once great profession of being a Physician, Mr. Community Organinzer. Well done sir!

obamtheflimflamman

I don't believe anyone would disagree health care needs reforms, however a lot of us disagree that it needs to be reformed on the obama the moron's socialist model!

southernguy08

Well, CONCERNED, you'd lose that bet with me. My wife had cancer 8 years go. Thank God she's beaten it, but our insurance did pay most of the treatment. I've lived overseas many years, including countries with nationalized healthcare. If you think coverage is rationed now by companies, wait till you see how the bureaucrats ration it. Reach a certain age and need cancer treatment? Sorry, too old. Go home and die. Have kidney disease and need dialysis? Sorry, no room for you in the program now. We'll put you on the list. Need a new knee? Sorry, no money in the budget. Maybe in 18 months. Don't laugh...I've seen it.

concernednative

southernguy, I said when they renew or have to change insurance companies.

Roeschen

I have to agree with southernguy. I have seen the effects of rationed medical care while living overseas. In fact, many of my friends in Germany purchased private insurance because the state health care was not good. They could not drop the state insurance, still paid 55% of their earnings in income tax, but at least they got into see the doctor when they needed to. Also, the socialized medicine did not cover many, many medicines, specialized treatments, elective surgery costs (i.e. knee replacement, hip replacement, or anything else that was not a life or death situation) and even some mandatory surgeries. So, if you think Obamacare is the answer, be my guest. I do not want it shoved down my throat.

dashiel on Wed Aug 12, 2009 7:16 AM Yes I may have a HIPPA number, but I don't need it to get my drivers license, Power, and water, garbage pick up or to sign for a loan YET! Soon folks giving loans may require my HIPPA number to check my health care stats to see if I'll be arounfd long enough to pay off the loan...LOL Or I amy say something about Obumbler spreading the wealth and my heealth history will be released to the press!

zzzzzzt

Look at the current government plans, mainly medicaid and medicare. They are worse than private insurers when it comes to denying payment, delaying payment, and looking for any reason not to pay. Their reimbursement is so low that it essentially pays less than 50% of what it actually costs physicians and hospitals to provide the care. If their weren't private insurers around to subsidize these programs, nobody could afford to accept patients with medicaid and medicare. They would have a very difficult time finding a physician and a hospital to accept them. That is the future under Obamas plan. However, i'm sure their solution to the problem will be to essentially require hospitals and physicians to accept patients choosing the government option. When that happens, you can say goodby to the worlds premier medical system. It has some problems that can be fixed, but does not need the radical destruction proposed by Obama.
