A new teacher's aide joined the staff at Lakeside High School on Monday. His nameplate outside the classroom is decorated with paw prints.
Bijou is the guide dog for Cassandra Gentry, a science teacher at the school who suffers from Retinitis Pigmentosa, an eye disease that progressively limits vision. In the past two years, her sight has deteriorated significantly.
Ms. Gentry can see well straight on but has lost most of her peripheral vision. She and Bijou graduated from training this summer, and his job is to help her navigate the Lakeside hallways by allowing her to look ahead as she walks.
On Monday, Ms. Gentry outlined to her classes what the rules are for Bijou. When he's at school, he's at work. Students can't pet or play around with the dog.
Ms. Gentry teaches five classes and is able to get around her classroom by stringing lights around the front desk and by "pacing" out the location of materials.
She's training for a spring triathlon and plans to raise money for a guide dog organization through her participation in the event.
Principal Jeff Carney said Ms. Gentry has been an inspiration to the staff.
"We can complain about furloughs, and we can complain about a lot," he said.
"She has perspective that some of us can lose sometimes."

NOT QUITE A UNIFORM
Many girls showed up at Lakeside High on Monday in mint green "SEN10R Ladies" T-shirts paired with white shorts or pants. It's a tradition for the girls of the senior class for the first day of school, said Katelynn Coley, 17. The design incorporates their graduation year, 2010.
Wow... I have to hand it to her. Vision problems and teaching at a high school. I wish Ms. Gentry and Bijou the best. Good luck.
I know Bijou is working but he's so adorable it would be hard not to want to pet him!
I commend you Ms Gentry. My son has a working dog, has had her for 10 years. She should have been allowed to go to school with him, but was not due to allergies of others in the classroom.
Best wishes and God's Blessings. Bijou is beautiful.
She has her plate full, but LHS is a wonderful school and I'm glad she chose LHS to teach. Best wishes and God bless you!! Of course GO PANTHERS!!
Duncan19- I have to disagree with you on saying that Lakeside High is a wonderful school. There are more drugs in this school than any other in Columbia County. If you don't believe me, pull the stats and look for yourself. If the bad students would be kicked out there wouldn't be such a problem with those wanting to learn having the ability to do so.
God bless you MS. Gentry! I admire you greatly. Wish you a successful schol year.
