Vazquez throws 7 strong innings in Braves' win

SAN DIEGO -- Javier Vasquez pitched seven strong innings and Martin Prado homered and drove in three runs to lead the Atlanta Braves to a 9-2 victory over the San Diego Padres on Tuesday night.

Matt Diaz hit a two-run homer and Prado had two RBIs in a four-run sixth inning as the Braves went ahead 7-2. Atlanta tied its season high with 17 hits and scored as many runs as it had in its last four games combined.

San Diego's Adrian Gonzalez had his consecutive games streak ended at 314 when he was held out of the starting lineup for the second straight game to give him additional rest. It was the longest streak in the majors.

Vazquez (9-7) gave up two runs and four hits and won his fourth consecutive decision. Mike Gonzalez and Boone Logan finished the four-hitter.

Prado hit a solo homer in the fifth off Tim Stauffer (1-3) to give the Braves a 3-2 lead. Adam LaRoche tied his career high with four hits and had an RBI, while Garrett Anderson had three hits and two RBIs.

Padres rookie Will Venable maintained his recent hot streak with a solo homer in the first, two walks and two runs scored. Venable is 11 for 23 with four home runs, 10 RBIs and six runs scored in the past six games.

The Braves, who won for just the fifth time in 12 games, broke the game open in the sixth against reliever Edward Mujica when Diaz hit a two-run homer into the right-field porch and Prado followed two batters later with a two-run single.

Diaz tied a franchise record by grounding into three double plays. It was the third time in the team's history it's happened, the first since 1955.
