Store employee robbed while making deposit

An employee of the DOTS Fashions store at 3412 Washington Road was robbed at gunpoint Saturday night while making a deposit at Wachovia Bank at 3440 Wrightsboro Road, a Richmond County sheriff's report states.

A man approached the driver's side of the woman's vehicle, pointed a pistol at her and demanded money at about 10 p.m., the report states. The woman gave the man the deposit bag, and he fled. The amount taken was not known.

The robber is described as black, about 20 years old, 5 feet 10 inches tall and about 150 pounds.

Man, 58, dies after being struck by car

A 58-year-old man struck by a car on Washington Road died Sunday at Medical College of Georgia Hospital.

Mark Bowen, Richmond County's chief deputy coroner, said Herbert Bowman, of the 100 block of Cedar Lane, was walking in the 3300 block of Washington Road about 1 a.m. Sunday when he darted in front of a 2007 Honda Accord driven by Antonio Young, 21, of North Augusta, according to witnesses.

Mr. Bowen said alcohol might have been a factor. Mr. Bowman died at 7:10 a.m. Sunday.

Area man airlifted from car crash in Greensboro

An Augusta-area man was airlifted to Medical College of Georgia Hospital on Sunday after an automobile accident in Greensboro, Ga.

MCG spokeswoman Denise Parrish said Bobby Unger was in critical condition Sunday night.

The two-vehicle crash happened about 5 p.m. in the westbound lane of Interstate 20 at the 130-mile marker, a Georgia State Patrol dispatcher said.

One person was killed and three others injured in the accident. No other details were available.

Police seek 2 men suspected in shooting

Police were looking Sunday for two men suspected in the shooting of a 37-year-old Augusta man in south Augusta.

Carl Gary Trimble Jr., 37, was wounded in his left leg, left shoulder and possibly his head in the shooting, which occurred about 3:45 p.m. Saturday in the 2200 block of Sullivan Road, a Richmond County sheriff's report states.

He was taken to the emergency room at the Medical College of Georgia Hospital, the report says.

An MCG spokeswoman said she had no record of him.

The shooting occurred when two men went to the victim's home and started arguing over who owned a bicycle the victim had . During the argument,

one of the men pulled out a handgun and fired three to four shots.

The shooter is described as black with brown eyes, about 5 feet 11 inches and weighing 180 pounds. He was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and multicolor, military-style shorts.

No description was available of the second man, whom police identified as Carl Thomas.

Board of Elections to hold monthly meeting

The Richmond County Board of Elections will hold its regular monthly meeting today .

The meeting, originally scheduled for Aug. 10, will follow a special called meeting to discuss the Board of Education vacancy caused by the death of District 5 trustee Joe Scott on July 25.

Both meetings will be held in the board office, 530 Greene St., Room 104, beginning at 6 p.m. The public is invited.

Literacy program to be discussed today

Local Rotary Club members will gather in Augusta today to discuss a literacy program that could put more books in the homes of Richmond County children.

The clubs in District 6920, which includes Richmond County, will gather at Augusta State University's Jaguar Student Activity Center at 4 p.m. to determine how to develop programs through the Ferst Foundation For Childhood Literacy, according to a news release.

The organization seeks to improve literacy for children 5 and younger in Georgia. The program is active in 69 counties.

Mayor Deke Copenhaver, Augusta commissioners, state senators and other officials also are expected to attend.

Richmond County

- There will be a lane closure on both sides of Bobby Jones Expressway between Scott Nixon Memorial Drive and Wheeler Road from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. today until Saturday.

- There will be a lane closure on both sides of Interstate 20 between Davis and Wheeler roads from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. today until Saturday.

- A lane will be closed on both sides of Wheeler Road between Augusta West Parkway and Agerton Lane from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today until Saturday.

- Marks Church Road west at Jamaica Road will be closed from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today until Saturday. Traffic will be detoured on Walton Way and Wheeler Road.

- Walton Way will remain closed between 13th Street and New Bailie Street for four months as part of the ongoing St. Sebastian Way extension project. Detours are in place.

It's a shame when a man can live to the age of 58 and then die unexpectedly in a car accident. But, then again, I suppose it's a tragedy no matter what age you are.
