According to a report from the North Augusta Department of Public Safety, Melissa Jeanne Sawyers, 29, of the 400 block of Dove Avenue, taped a garden hose to the exhaust pipe of her car Monday night and ran it into the backseat in an attempt to fill the vehicle with exhaust fumes.
Ms. Sawyers drove to a residence on the 2100 block of Vireo Drive, where witnesses said she told them she and the children would soon be watching down on them.
When asked to explain herself, Ms. Sawyers opened the back door to reveal the garden hose, the police report states. Her children, a girl, 10, and a boy, 7, then ran from the vehicle screaming that their mother was trying to kill them.
Police called to the scene said the children later told them that their mother said they were going to go to sleep and wake up in heaven together.
They also said Ms. Sawyers had driven the car around for a while before stopping at the residence.
Neither Ms. Sawyers nor the children required medical treatment. She was arrested, taken to Aiken Regional Medical Centers, then booked at the Aiken jail, the report states.
