One lawman's take on the president

  • Follow Letters

Dear Mr. President:

As an elected Democratic Sheriff of Richmond County, Georgia, I must write to you and show my great disappointment and displeasure at your comments to the nation involving Police Sgt. James Crowley and Professor Henry Louis Gates Jr.

I make hundreds of comments to the media and citizens of this county. But my personal policy is to never make comments on things until I hear both sides and completely understand the situation.

This did not happen before you made your remarks about the unfortunate situation between the officer and the professor. Remember, there are two sides to every story.

Being in law enforcement for the past 33 years, I felt obligated to write, and now feel better knowing I have voiced my personal opinion on a situation we all wish never happened.

Sheriff Ronald Strength

Augusta

This President did exactly
Unpublished

This President did exactly the correct thing: He spoke out against stupid behavior by those sworn to serve the public. The EASY thing would have been: "I don't know the details and will reserve judgement or its an ongoing investigation and lets wait."
The President didn't choose the EASY way, he addressed a serious issue that millions of Americans have been victims of, but have no voice. Yes, there are "two sides to every story" but normally only one legal side. The professor has the law on his, and since we are a nation of laws, the Constitution supports Professor Gates' positon. How do we know? Well, the prosecutor, probably a well-versed law expert, dropped the charges. The President is a Constitutional lawyer and easily recognized the violation and correctly stated the historical evidence of such bad behavior by law enforcement. That took courage. The first step in solving a problem is acknowledging it and if the President's words give one officer a moment to pause, before acting on personal biases, then thats one fellow citizen who will not suffer the degradation of unlawful detainment.

justus4 on Fri Jul 31, 2009

justus4 on Fri Jul 31, 2009 5:04 AM Gates has a history of this type of behavior. Crowley was there to protect Gates nothing more. Gates has gone of on cops before. The hard thing for Obama to do is keep his big mouth shut until he understands the situation. Unfortunately, just as Gates has a history of going off on cops, Obama has a history of shooting off his mouth before he understands the facts as in Hounduras and Iran and now with his firend Gates!

Thank you Sherrif Strength

Thank you Sherrif Strength for the hard job you have undertaken. I haven't heard one thank you from Mr Gates for the fast response to a possible break-in at his home.

justus4, the racist professor

justus4, the racist professor made a racial incident out of a typical break in investigation. All he had to do was show proof of occupancy and identify himself and all would have been just fine. Instead he threw a childish hissy fit. What a fine representative of Harvard and the black community. How much do you recon he helped race relations with his little tantrum?

I'll bet every crook in that

I'll bet every crook in that area is just waiting for the media to get off his lawn and the grand prof to go on another trip. Nobody in their right mind would call the cops, the last person that did that is now receiving death threats for being a racists. No cop is going to take any investigation seriously if they are called over to investigate a break in. I'm renting a UHaul and calling up one of my black buddies to head to his house and clean his tail out!

All I know is that this

All I know is that this country is doomed. I really thought Obama would make a change for this country. How many other Presidents do U know of have acted with no respect to this country and the younger generation, in offering a beer party to try and settle differences of opinions. That is the sure reason GOD will never Bless this Country unless we let him(GOD) know he is still in control.

justus, the

justus, the professor--"Skip"----is a walking "napolean complex" with a chip on his shoulder and a big mouth who was instructed twice to lower his voice because his berating and insulting the officer was "disturbing the peace", and after refusing to obey two verbal warnings, Sgt Crowley placed him under arrest. Prezbojangles and "Skip" are the ones who acted "stupidly"---Skip with his actions and Prezbojangles for his remark, and his refusal to say "I'm sorry, I made a mistake." A little life's lesson for you justus, when a law enforcement officer gives verbal instructions twice for you to correct your behavior, and you refuse to correct your behavior, then be prepared to change your location, because you are going to jail. Skip is a Chihuahua with a Rottweiler attitude, and Prezbojangles is an arrrogant incompetent whose ego will not allow him to admit his mistakes.

Keep being proud, but this has nothing to do with Obama being a half white person raised by white people, LOL and getting a good education in Marxism. It has to do with sombody in authority shooting off their mouth without all the facts!

Wrong, Guess Who. Obama is

Wrong, Guess Who. Obama is not our boss. We are his boss. He is an elected public servant. We pay his salary with our taxes. We own his home; he's only a temporary tenent. We (well, not everyone) put him in his position, and we will take him out.

The point that all the right

The point that all the right wing wants to leave it what happened after he got there. Just like Hannity last night he gave us the warm and fuzzies about the cops going to protect property, and not knowing what to expect. OK, I got that. But once there he had a elderly man who he KNEW WAS IN HIS ON HOUSE B4 HE ARRESTED HIM. There are no reports of physical threats or attempts to assault the office. So that is why the DA the expert and person probably with the MOST FACTS dropped the case. All Crowley had to do was leave the old fool in his house. But his ego got in the way and he used his power to wrongly arrest. Him Gates ego got in the way but he didn't break the law. Hurting Crowley's feeling in your own home is not illegal.

But Ronnie you know racial

But Ronnie you know racial profiling is even happening with your officers, what about the white officers you've fired (and there are probably some still there) that have done racial and bias things against blacks and minorities in the CSRA. How many cases you got on your desk right now that the public don't know about dealing with RACE against your officers? You are a good sheriff but don't act like RCSD is exempt.

There is more to this story

There is more to this story than most of the public will ever know. But Ronnie Strength is correct...it is best to make no comment till you know all the facts. Plus, aren't there bigger issues our president should be addressing??? Shouldn't this have been left to be handled by local authorities? The whole thing is like "tabloid" reading.

concernednative, you make a

concernednative, you make a big assumptive jump when you go straight to "KNEW WAS IN HIS ON HOUSE B4 HE ARRESTED HIM." The house is owned by Harvard and is listed as a rental. All Skip had to do was show he belonged there (that's all the police asked for) and everything would have been fine. After Skip identified himself and the police asked for proof of residency, he threw his hissy fit...and elevated his noise level and insult level beyond all reason. The recordings the officer made are pretty clear. Imagine how nasty a crippled old man in his own house would have to be to make an officer, an anti-racist profile instructor, arrest him. This wasn't a racist incident, it was a grouchy old man being nasty for no reason.

I appreciate Sheriff Strength

I appreciate Sheriff Strength standing up for what's right in this case. Of course, I don't always agree with him, but this time there's no question. It was kind of funny seeing the news with them drinking beer at the table brought by that wimpy butler guy. The cop turns up his mug soon as he got the beer and drank about half. The others sipped it slowly. I bet Crowley thought they were going to drink a few. What pansy waisted Democrats sipping on a mug of beer like it was a glass of Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1982. They would have left friends if they had downed a few more beers.

deros made the only sensible comment here....it is not the President's job to comment on or involve himself with matters at this level of importance to our nation. Afterall, that's the only purpose Rev Al Sharpton has to wake up in the mornings, wouldn't want to leave him with nothing to do. At least we know what to expect from him.

Keep reading that 1000 page

Keep reading that 1000 page healthcare reform bill he authorized the authoring of Concernednative, until you get to the plans he had envisioned for all of those "old folks" down in Florida and everywhere else in the country. If he's lucky, he might make the 3.5 but, he shot himself out of the saddle in 2012.

"The POTUS isn't our "boss",

"The POTUS isn't our "boss", He works for us. We hired him and we can fire him, too."--Obama seems to be answering to no one but himself. His policies and actions indicates that he does not have the best interests of the American citizen at heart. And nobody in Washington is trying to stand up to him. At the rate Obama is going, I would not be surprised that he tries to change the constitution so that he may stay in power indefinitely. Obama is trying to ram his policies through, regardless of how anyone feels about them. It will not be long before the new motto will be: America, the home of Obamites and the land of the deep throats.

Who cares what the prof.

Who cares what the prof. thinks. He is a winey old f--- that thinks everybody should know him. He acted out like a child and according to the law in Mass. that is distrubing the peace. If he had done what is right nothing would have happened. As for the comment about a black cop coming to the home of a white person when the alarm went off, it has happened top me and when I cooporated with two Id's everyuthing was fine. He walked thru the house, checked it out and left. The prof. should have let the officer do that and without his mouth and all would be well.
