GreenJackets earn split with Hickory

In Hickory, N.C., the Augusta GreenJackets finished off Tues-day's suspended game with the Crawdads by defeating Hickory 7-1 on Wednesday.

In the regularly-scheduled game, the GreenJackets managed just five hits in a 5-0 defeat.

Leadoff hitter Francisco Peguero , who leads Augusta with a .351 batting average, collected four hits in the two games.

- The GreenJackets are kicking off a nine-game home stand with a "beer summit" at tonight's game (7:05) against Greenville. The event will coincide with the "beer summit" President Obama is holding at the White House with Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates and police officer James Crowley .

At the local event, Budweiser products will be $1 in recognition that Obama was seen drinking a Bud during the 2009 All-Star Game. Also any fan that shares a part of his or her name with one of the three men involved in Obama's event will be granted free admission.

Green advances to the U.S. Amateur

Augusta's Michael Green advanced out of U.S. Amateur sectional qualifying with a two-day, 137 total. He finished fifth, three shots behind winner Phillip Mollica , in the qualifier at Columbia Country Club in Blythewood, S.C.

Green becomes the third player with local ties to qualify for the U.S. Amateur, scheduled for Aug. 24-30 at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla. He will join Augusta State men's coach Josh Gregory and Jaguar sophomore Patrick Reed .

- In Greensboro, Ga., Augusta's Laura Coble is five shots behind leader Tess Fordham after Wednesday's opening round of the Georgia Top 60 Women's Classic at Reynolds Landing Golf Course. Coble is in fourth place after carding 4-over-par 76.

In the first flight, Augusta's Regan Freville is tied for fourth at 83. Mary Helen McElreath, of Augusta, is tied for sixth (84) in the second flight. Jan Cross, of Evans, is in 13th place (100) in the fourth flight.

- Houndslake Country Club in Aiken is holding a renovation party open to the public at 5:30 p.m. Friday. The event will feature free hot dogs, ice tea, tours of the renovations on the Dogwood Nine, the new putting facility and other improvements, led by the club's golf professionals and general manager Jeff Howell .

Golfers can play the renovated Azalea Nine for just $20. Call the golf shop at 648-3333 for a tee time.

Sports council to hold local summit

The Augusta Sports Council is hosting a "Local Sports Bodies" summit at 5 p.m. today at Julian Smith BBQ Pit.

The event will feature information on how the sports council can support existing competition, develop new events and assist local organizers to provide the best experience for competitors and fans alike.

Reinsdorf's bid for Coyotes approved

The NHL Board of Governors approved a bid Wednesday by Jerry Reinsdorf to assume ownership of the financially troubled Phoenix Coyotes, and rejected an application by Canadian billionaire Jim Balsillie .

The group headed by Reins-dorf was the only one of three applicants to gain the board's approval.

Sharapova cruises in Bank of the West

In Stanford, Calif., Maria Sharapova needed just over an hour to beat 10th-ranked and fifth-seeded Nadia Petrova , 6-1, 6-2, in a second round-match of the $700,000 Bank of the West Classic.

- In Los Angeles, Marat Safin , summoned enough energy to beat Ernests Gulbis, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, in the second round of the L.A. Tennis Open. Safin had played an exhibition match against Pete Sampras on Monday and beat Robby Ginepri the following night.
